Paul will be forwarding information and pictures to us Sunday. I'll see if I can reach him Saturday for updates, too. We are at the Rhinelander Outing and Walleye Weekend for coverage this weekend.

I was thinking this was going to be an awesome year with a record number of legals caught but this nice cold front and brutal East wind just took care of that.

How wrong was I? VERY
I heard the results were off the charts. I think something like 4 people doubled and a 52" fish only got 4 th place. I heard two seperate 50" fish and a 49" fish finshed out of the money. JAW DROPPING RESULTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What would the results have been without a cold front and 20MPH+ East winds?

Congrats to Paul Hartman for another great Metro Tourney! I believe Paul said it was a record year for fish caught and am certain the 52 out of Waconia was the largest ever for the MN Metro Tourney.

Wish I could have been out fishin with the rest of the crowd yesterday. Anyone know the breakdown of how everyone did on each of the lakes in the tourny?

I know there is a lot of interest from people on the board as to details of the event. Anyone here with knowledge please share!

Congrats to everyone who boated fish!

Paul Hartmans Tournament has set a new standard on how to run a Tournament... The rest of the Tournaments will be Digital shots on measure boards... Great attempts to cause very little stress on handled fish...Much better than in live well and raced to a pen or whatever getting the spots beat off of them... Anyone interested in fishing the rest of the Tour please contact Paul at www.mnmuskietournament.com or 753-786-6031 for more info...Mr. Hartman has done an UNBELIEVABLE job on stocking muskies in several lakes with a impressive success ratio... These lakes are growing some impressive size and #'s as well.. I have a few issues with the Hartman format that Oldgoat states is the format that all tournaments will follow.

How do you know if the fish survived is my main concern. In a Judge Boat format the fish is witnessed swimming away. If the fish doesn't survive the anglers are docked points or loss all points. This insures careful handling of the fish.

Personnally I like to know that a judge as verified the length of the a fish rather then a photo or a witness. That my issue and if I fish a Hartman event I know that going in so I guess it doesn't matter if you don't mind some controvery.

Having the Metro tournament set up as part of the MMT trail is kinda goofy also.
Why have 3 tournaments that are 2 day, 2 person teams on one lake with all anglers compeating for the same fish under the same circumstances. Then you have the Metro which is a totally different format, no photos, a bunch of different lakes, witnesses to verify fish.??? I just don't get it.

guest if Minnesota goes to the 48 inch minnimum on 43 or more lakes like is proposed and this would include all the large trophy ones,,,that basicly eliminates judge boat tournaments has the DNR has already said you wont be able to keep a sub 48 in the net at the side of the boat waiting for a judge,,I dont know how many guys are gonna enter a Tourney where they have to produce a 48" to qualify,,Seems to me if we want to keep having big money tourneys in Minn then a whole new format needs to be produced and I applaud Paul Hartman for trying to stay one step ahead,,,Just two weeks ago Paul took a day away from fishing "when the fish were going" to drive up to vermillion and spend the day driving around to find the best CELL phone provider service on all parts of the lake Paul leaves no loose ends in his Tourneys,,,,Has far has the metro tourney goes,,'why not"",,,,Why not give someone a chance who cant afford a $1000 entry into the championship to have a shot at it for $35,,,Bottom line is "catch fish" you still have to catch them to qualify no matter what format,,,The world serise of poker has the same thing if I remember right they have lesser $2500 satelite tournaments with the winner of these getting an entry into the big tourney

Good Day "Guest", My reason to post info about Hartman's tournament was to raise some interest in some of the internet HEROS so they would find it in their busy and complicated lives as to how the guidelines will help and or affect the targeted fish for tournaments... Hope fully you went to the web site and read and fully understood the rules pertaining to the tournaments in question... If you have any qustions and or concerns please inquire about them..at tourn. web site. Hook, thanks for your input too! Wayne Klemz

I used to love the Metro Tourney when it wasn't connected to some year end trail. Now you've got 540 fisherman on basically 5 lakes casting and trolling all over each other and the fun has basically been sucked right out of the event. I had some fun yelling "there's one" and doing figure eights just to see how many boats would converg on the spot when we left. There is no doubt that smaller prize payouts made for more fun.
540 this year and a record catch should make for an absolute madhouse next year. Have fun!!!

Hooker- I said nothing negitive about PH. Why so defensive? I just don't think the format is best for the muskie.

As far as the 48" min. coming into law. First of all, we're not there yet. The DNR will be discussing that issue this fall.

Lets say the 48" min DOES happen. What is the difference between 2 guys hooking a 41" fish catching it, hauling it into the boat, taking several pictures of it, then releasing it. verses 2 guys catch a 41", never lift it out of the water until a judge it there, haul it in the boat take several pictures and then release it.

I have talked to the DNR about this issue. It seems like every state doesn't have a problem with tournaments catching and measuring fish under the state min. as long as they don't transport the fish. Basically, in order to tell if a fish is of legal length, you have to measure it, right??

I see little or no difference in how the fish is handled other then the fact that in a judge boat format, the fish is held for a minute or 2 longer.

I would even state that in a photo tournament that the fish is out of the water longer as the photo most important. If taking a photo of a fish that could win $1,000 of dollars, I'm gonna make sure that picture is perfect. If it requires taking 10 shots. You take a picture, look at you view finder, review the picture,
its a little dark, the process continues until you've got the perfect shot. So what is more damaging to the fish. Swimming in the water for an extra 1 or 2 minutes or being out of the water an extra 1 or 2 minutes.

Again, I'm not ripping PH so don't get all crazy and defensive.

Less fun

The positive to 540 entrants is that provides alot more funds to devote to raising fish,,,Paul Hartman is the largest private rearer/stocker of muskies in Minn so there is some benefit, especially to white bear,,,If we didnt have white bear has a muskie lake how crowded would the metro muskie lakes be on a EVERY day basis,,white bear is mostly dependent on Stocking by Muskies inc and Paul Hartman

Guest you make some good points but
there has to be a 'new' format for tourneys if we still want to use sub 48's has entrants possibly in the future if the size proposal passes,,it seems that the CPR system will work with that ,,,When I glimpsed the list of lakes proposed Cass,Leech,Vermillion,Mille lacs were all on it,,strangely Minnetonka wasnt ,,,so that would leave only one lake with a 40 minnimum that was a favorite big money destination,,,I just dont think guys are gonna lay down hundreds of dollars on entrys, gas, lodging if the know they "must" catch a whopping 48 just to have a chance at a check in a judge boat tourney if this comes to pass and I think it will pass,,,I guess if people are fans of Judge boat tourneys they better make it a point to show up at the public input meetings and make this case heard,

The rules are what they are, I think the Metro tournament is only good for the sport. It gives the people that are new to the sport a little taste of the tournament competition without having to put out the bigger money to fish the other tournaments. I look at it as just another thing that Paul is doing to grow the sport and help the fisheries, without having to line his pockets. I personally don't like the Cass and Leech tournament situation where you can fish 2 lakes for big money. To me it's more like testing one lake against another instead of one angler against another. But, if that's the rules, like the new measuring system, then lets just play by them and have fun. If you are that crabby about the system then don't enter because you'll probably just be grumping the whole time. If you want to have a great weekend at a fun tournament with a good bunch of guys, then sign up and enjoy it. A few minor rules changes won't keep me from enjoying the thrill of the competition and the fun of fishing some of Minnesota's best waters that I probably wouldn't make it to without this new trail. Best of luck to all who enter,
NOW, Back to the original question, WHO WON??? Who placed? on what lakes? etc.???

Yea I had to refresh. Thanks
The person who won the tournament is a neighbor of mine and this saturday was the first chance he had to fish for muskies except for one hour last week,he is a real nice guy that has his own lawn and plow buisness. He said he may invite me to fish with him on Minnetonka.
There was no shortage of boats out there saturday, the most I have ever seen fishing muskies at the same time.
