Stopped at thornes this weekend to spool a reel and grab a chatterbait while available and while hanging out a guy came in who had been up on Mille lacs,,,He needed prices on some items for insurance has his boat had been ravaged by thieves,,kicker motor,,Expensive depthfinder and other items,,I know this is a popular destination with people on this board so if you HAVE to leave your boat out overnite this year take your tackle and electronics with you. This is a problem in that area that seems to get worse everyyear,,Here it is the first weekend of gamefish season 'walleye' and the Ripoffs up there are already lurking,,,pay the extra and launch your boat at a resort

WOW! These thieves actually took the time and had the time to unbolt and disconnect a kicker motor and had the means to "walk off" with it unnoticed?! Man...that's the first I've every heard of that being done. That IS bad. I really do feel sorry for the guy. I gotta say...those theives took a big risk dealing with such a big, bulky item that could slow them down...and something that has a serial # attached to it that the boat owners insurance company should certainly already had on file.

Major bummer to hear that.

I have been through the same thing myself here in Central Wisconsin. There are thieves everywhere. They got me twice in a 2 month span. If they come back I will shoot first and ask questions later. As much as it sucks to pay insurance it is your best friend in a situation like this.

Take pictures of your equipment every year so you know what you have. Speaking from experience it is a major pain to do a inventory of tackle boxes with only memories in your head.

Just once it would be nice if the owners of the stolen goods could catch the theives in the act.

A few years ago a co-worker went to the Wisc. Dells with his family for the weekend, after they checked into the room he looked out the window to see a person in his car under the dash, he called the police and ran down to his car , when he got there he held the individual in a head lock untill the police showed up ( Only about 1 Min ), Well the person was arrested and spent the weekend in Jail, about a Month after the event my co-worker got a summons to appear in court for causing injury to the individual.

The crook sued him for $5000 in lost wages & Medical Bills. The really sad part is the CROOK WON, It was ruled that Excessive force was used in holding this person.

Don't take measures into your own hands it could end up costing you much more

Shoulda put that judge in a head lock for even hearing that case. And if it was a jury trial, I think each one of those on the jury should have been given their very own sign.

Same thing happened to me last April. I am sorry to say that pictures alone are not enough to satisfy the insurance companies.
They wanted every receipt from everything from lures to split rings. Who keeps receipts from lures? What really hurts is that many of the lures stolen were very sentimental and no amount of money could replace them. Total loss was around $5,000 dollars and I received about a tenth of that back. Let me ever find someone doing that to me again, all I can say is Aluminum Bat! Just something about that PING!! Jason Bovee

Which insurance company is that? I suggest everyone contact their insurance co. and find out what exactly you need if something gets stolen. I am going to find out about state farm tommorow and will post what I find out. It is a pain to take off all electronics and remove everything in your boat everynight, but it is your best bet.

Nothing worse than a thief...

I have a good amount of money wrapped up in some custom rods and stuff like that... some of them gifts, some of them saved for. I think I might go batman on someone if half of my stuff disappeared.

MuskyJay, I have StateFarm. As you stated, it would be wise for everybody to contact their agent and see exactly what is needed in case the worst. And, from now on, save ALL off your receits! Jason Bovee

With the large number of fishing equipment thefts around Mille Lacs I'm surprized the Sheriff's Dept. up there hasn't set up a sting operation with surveillance teams. Set up a decoy boat and equipment and wait for the morons to take the bait. Works everytime!

It's not just Mille lacs. It's statewide according to the officer that came when my stuff was stolen. I wonder where they are selling the stuff?

Make a video tape of all your gear, electronics, motors, and expensive items at home. Keep the tape in a safe place. It can help when making an insurance claim.

The "thieves" are already out? I never knew they went back in! Seroiusly, do not leave your boat and trailer unattended at gas stations, restraunts, bait stores, etc. We have a major "Johnny Go-Fast Powder" (meth) problem in this area and these people will steal anything they can get thier hands on.

Should of done a piledriver onto the pavement, then he couldn't talk.

Being from Chicago, I never trust my stuff in the boat. I keep it all in my locked van and covered with a blanket(with my dog).

One for the Good Guy’s:

I remember about 10 years ago a friend of mine Pete who is a Sergeant with the Illinois State police & I
Headed up to Eagle River to do some Musky fishing, I picked him up at his Station after work and we headed to North Twin, By the time we got there after checking in at the Hotel it was already Dark Out as we pulled into the landing there was a car there no boat / trailer but in my headlights we could make out that there were two people in the car, not thinking much about it we went about our business of getting the boat ready for some Night time Musky action when both guys get out of the car and head towards us, They started asking what we were going fishing for, we talked fishing for a little while then one of the guys asks Pete if he wanted to buy some Cocaine, Pete says “let me see it” the guy pulls out of his pocket a bag that must have had 30-40 rocks in it Pete Says “ Let me get a better look” so they go to the front of the truck by the headlights Pete looks over the stuff and asks “How Much ?” after some bargaining Pete says “OK, Let me get some Cash”
Now remember I picked Pete up from work so he has his Badge and Revolver in his duffel bag, Pete gets his Badge & Revolver walks back to the front of the truck and Shows them his badge informs the two that they are now under arrest for trafficking Cocaine, Just about then another boat was coming off the lake to our surprise it was a Game Warden who used his radio to call for Back-up.

The end result for the night was caught 6, Released 4, Kept 2 behind bars

That's awesome, John. We should all be mindful of other fishermans things while we watch our own. I would have no problem with someone holding a thief for me. Or visa-versa. "Rat's, their all Rat's, his whole family's Rat's" (Goodfellas).

As someone that works in the insurance claims business what I would love to see but hardly ever do see is photos of the stuff or a video. Reciepts are great as are owners manuals etc. When I get back from the store I usually throw the reciept in a shoe box that I keep fishing related reciepts. If the adjuster can see and identify the item they shouldn't need a reciept thats why photos are so #*^@ good to have. Most adjusters have no idea of the amount of tackle guys have and find it hard to believe. Most guys don't even know nor can they remember all the stuff they have. The average adjuster has a hard time believing that you could have paid 40 or 50 bucks for what appears to be a piece of 2x2 with some paint on it. You'll need to prove your loss and a picture could be worth a lot of $$$ and a lot less problems.

I dont understand why the area police can't set up a sting operation???
You'd think it would be easy enough to do, and imagine how much it would slow down some thieves if they heard it was going on.

I had my trailer stolen while I was out fishing! Came back to the landing and It was gone. the theives somehow clipped the "tamper proof" lock and took the trailer. It took me about a month to get a new trailer from insurance, which meant that I had to keep my boat at a marina until then. luckily insurance covered everything, including the marina.

A few years back I had all my equiptment stolen, rods reels lures and electronics. I have state farm and had no problems at all. Did not have any photos or paperwork. Your agent probably wanted the proof I dont believe state farm requires it.I got back about $4000, probably not as much as it was worth but you live and learn. Ive been looking into small motion detector alarms but dont know if it would work. At least I had a lock on the kicker motor. Theres a special place for thieves and i'd like to send them there.

I was up at Mille Lacs a few days ago, there was and undercover cop car hiding behind a series of dumpsters at like midnight. From what I could tell he was watching the hotel parking lot at the Garrison Inn and Suites. I don't like cops exactly but it was good to see one watching my back for once. There seemed to be a lot of cops in the area for how little of a population up there. I hope they are trying to get this under control. I still wont leave anything out. Well hope everyone the best in keeping their fishing gear.
