Here is something I have been playing aroudn with for over a year. Some are already out but not in big numbers. Anyone see a need for these? The weight is 6.3oz. and length is about 9 inches. Side hooks should help the hooking% and the extra weight vs the other walk the dog lures should reduce the blowouts/misses. This lure pushes a LOT of water but still glides well after each jerk. I think I could keep the price at or under $20. Seeing what the going rate might bring on eBay right now. From what I have seen on eBay you will get about 20-30% less than what retail will bring. Good way to see what your stuff is worth within reason...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
James

4 trebles...I love it. My favorite walk the dog topwater gets hit a lot...but only 2 hooks hurts catching percentage.

Got the idea from looking at and mixing a zarra spook (my favoirite childhood bass lure) and a Creepenstein. I am sure somebody has made soemthign like this but I have not seen a lure like this with two side hooks vs a single belly hook.

interesting idea. i like that color too. wouldn't 4 hooks be an issue in some places though? i think you're only allowed 3 in MI. i can't remember though.

also, do you really wanna call it the wildo?

would make for some interesting conversations though...
'what'cha throwin' there?'
'oh, it's my wildo'
'*shock*'

Wildo was the funny name. My buddy has about every odd named lure in his box. So, we just named the lure what it looked like... Only the lady muskies like it anyway so it seemed appropriate. Maybe I could fine the name of an interesting attack sub or some odd bug. Seems most muskie lures have a funny sexual name or some made up name. Many are memoravble to say the least. lol

As for the hooks, I should check into that but, the side hooks are what set this apart from the others topwater lures. Just curious how many people in MI have been seen with lures like the creepenstein or the like.

4 hooks is illegal in WI. Cool looking bait though.

The original design of the Spoonman lure had 5 hooks. With this I had many people telling me this lure was illegal in Wisconsin. In my research of this I contacted the Wi DNR and posed the question to them. Below is their answer.

Corey Meyer

It is not illegal to have more than three hooks on one lure. The law you were probably thinking about is designed to keep people from hooking more than three fish at the same time. It includes hooks as well as lines since some rigs are designed to have more than one hook on a given line. These rigs would be designed to catch a fish for each hook.
A lure such as you describe is designed to catch one fish at a time therefore you can have more than three treble hooks on a given lure.

I hope that answers your question fully, if not feel free to contact us again. Also if you have specific musky related questions or comments you can contact Tim Simonson at [email protected]

Thank you

Thanks!

I did not check with other states so I have no clue other than Wisconsin. I know any of my lures I make for Minnesota/Canada anglers I only make with 3 hooks.

Just talked with the MN DNR and as long as it is a lure designed to catch one fish at a time I can use any number of hooks that I want to.

Thanks again for possing that problem. Always good to check on those issue.

Out in New Jersey where I'm currently residing, it is illegal to have more than 9 hook points on any lure. Just an FYI. Nice bait though. Pat

Just checked the Utah fishing guide: 'no artificial lure may have more than 3 hooks.'

i'd still be up for one though if it proves itself. cool idea. plus i plan on getting back to MN or somewhere at least once a year for a week or so. i'd try taking the front hook off to use it out here even.
even though at 6.3 oz. it is a bit of a beast. keep us informed though, eh?

I probably need to call the upper states and into Canada and map out the regualtions. Not that MN muskie fishermen could not buy a lot but, I woudl liek it if my lure coudl be bought by more than just MN fishermen... Rule #2 of business, "Make sure you have buyers".

Any thoughts on too many hooks? I witnessed a foul hooked fish last year that made me consider going to 2 hooks on some of my topwater lures.

I believe Canada has 4 hooks max.

Pennsylvania has a 3 hooks max.

Not sure about too many hooks... I usually just start cutting them off with bolt cutters once I see it is going to take some work to get them out of a fish. Once the lure is out of the fishes mouth you can easily pull out the piece in a short time. I woudl only guess more hooks would improve your odds of boating the fish but also improve the odds you will get more hooks into the fish.

My past problems.....I killed a lot of pike when I was young as I wanted to "save my hooks". I hope to teach my little boy and girl that a $0.25 hook is worth the price to save a 10+ year old fish... I think the most important thing to do regardless of your lure situation is to always have bolt cutters and extra hooks and split rings when fishgin for muskies and pike.

The situation we came across involved a 49" fish that was hooked in the face, -snout and eye.I know this will happen from time to time but I believe with one less treble this particular fish would have come out in better shape than it did. Just something to think about.

One last note on teh 4 hooks per lure....

Just noticed all of my double jointed Radtke lures have four hooks. Never thought of that until now.

I don't believe that its illegal to have 4 hooks, You can only have 3 lines but I think 4 hhoks on a bait ok. I tried it with the zig-zag and had success but never marketed that way.
