I am wondering if anyone understands the science or affects of different arm lengths on spinnerbaits along with blade positioning? so far my design has a longer lower arm with about half the length of the upper arm. I am trying to design some personal baits for slow rolling, burning and grinding. Any input would be great.

By making the lower arm longer, a spinnerbait will be less likely to roll, esp. during fast retrieves. But the spinnerbait will be more flexible & floppy, and will bend more easily when fighting a fish compared to a spinnerbait with a shorter lower arm.

The upper arm can be as short as you want, but I never make it longer than the distance from the line tie to the hook point. I feel that if it’s any longer, it will interfere with hooking.

Try different lengths to suit your preferences and the waters you fish.

I built that type of spinnerbait for musky and Northern Pike for years. From my experience the esox species seem to favor an upper arm that is shorter as compared to the same bait (in a smaller size) for largemouth bass.

After a lot of trial and error, I eventually built all esox baits with a short upper arm.

Tools. tools, tools.I use both short and long arm spinnerbaits.Typically, long arm(Ace Tandems) for fishing less cover and short arm(Raddogs) for thicker stuff. The vibration from a long arm is amazing, and the Ace Tandems have a #8 willow with a smaller colorado.I play with blades a lot and have various styles on the 'Dogs.Jason Long (LongTales) is making both, and after using his 3oz.Big Shot(I think) with a short arm and a single #8 willow last season, I was hooked.Never rolled and can be burned. So many tools, so little time.
