if they have it made in China using .10 labor... Guess what?

No excise tax.

So the american lure maker gets punished and encouraged to ship the work overseas.

That is great.

That's what is making America not-so-great: the lobbying power of Wal-Mart. They can buy exemptions for their suppliers that the rest of us can only imagine. Another reason to avoid the place. m

Jed,

Just got off the phone and it has been confirmed...Unfortunately yes it is. If the company purchases the bait/lure completed and they do not manufacture it or finish it...

I hate everyone.

Use your brains, fellas. Cost of labor, not excise tax, is the issue. U.S. labor costs had to get a lot higher than those overseas before it started making sense to manufacture anywhere else because of all the ADDITIONAL costs involved.

Wal-Mart is causing our problems? No way. Wal-Mart gives the masses of people that shop there what they want. Wal-Mart answers to their customers just like any other business.

Greed is causing our problems for sure. Greedy corporations? Sure! But also greed among consumers who demand cheaper prices; greed among labor organizations that demand wages that don't reflect the realities of the market, greed among people who aren't willing to donate their time and money to causes that would improve living conditions for poor Americans, greed among parents who are too selfish to properly raise their children, etc., etc., etc....

Personally, I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I'm willing to spend more with companies that I'm convinced are providing better jobs for their employees and (ultimately) the employees of the companies whose products they sell.

Just more reason to boycott things made in china (that word doesn't even deserve to be capped.) I've sold almsot all of my lures made overseas except Rapalas and Mepps, which are still made overseas but by quality companies (not Trophy Technoligies.) Heres a little piece of info for everyone, called R/H a couple days ago asking if they had gotten the new Fudally Twists in, and the guy said "the company (Fudally) hadn't even gotten them from overseas yet." Yeah, so much for buying one of those.

OK, why pick on China? How about ireland or Germany or Viet Nam? England? Brazil? Mexico? What's the trade off; foreign markets, for example? Come on, this isn't a Wal Mart issue, it's a free trade and global market issue and I don't much care for what happens to MY ability to make a living when protectionist restrictions are applied, I've seen that during the Nixon admin and it didn't work. The US consumer WANTS inexpensive products, and WON'T buy the expensive item if the inexpensive item is as good or close; go ahead and build one and see how you do. Complain to the mirror if you are a consumer who bought ANYTHING with a foreign made component. Oh, wait, most do with the exception of truly crafted special items like basement baits.... We have constructed this system built on the bounty of the globe and we, as Americans, are the 'worst' or if you are an importer, 'best' consumers on this planet.

US Federal Excise tax, by definition, is applied to products built here in the US. Look into where those funds go, and then decide if you like or hate the tax, but pay it if you are retailing lures. Of course, you could always move to Mexico, China, or say..South America or the Middle East, since we are burning a fair amount of the oil from there anyway, but then you'd be a fererner there.

How many people eat at Chinese Restaurants here? Mexican restaurants? I know I do and I love em. How many people here buy goods that are made in foreign countries? Check out your clothes and shoes. Parts of your cars are made in foreign countries. So for everyone out there who is gonna boycott foreign countries I expect you to start wearing a paper bag (make sure it's made in America).
About wal mart, personally I can't afford to not shop at WalMart. I'm sure there are people on here that can afford to shop elsewhere but personally I love walmart. I save lot's of money compared to a mall or some mom and pop store. Isn't WalMart the 1st or 2nd largest employer in America? If you get rid of WalMart then lot's of people (my friends and your friends) lose jobs that support there family. Heck WalMart even has the cheapest gas prices down here...lol

It's not just the excise tax. I don't care, I'll pay it because my family needs to eat and we need a place to live, and after I pay my health insurance premiums I get a whole $650 a month to live on after losing my job and trying to make a hobby into a business to try to scrounge a few extra bucks together because I can't get a job at 50 with a back that is shot. American labor. There's American labor. The disposable workforce. But I have to pay more in taxes because I sold some lures to the guys on this site and can't take the chance of the IRS screwing with me. So I'm done making lures until the Gov't sets me up with a website and business know-how, because I'm disabled and nobody will hire me.
Hooray for me.

Looked under the hood of your American made car yet?
Hoses made in Taiwan, Mexico, etc.
Cheap stuff coming in from Pakistan, Tools from China, etc.
Wonder if they make their military stuff out of the same cheap junk they send here?
Welcome to the Club of disability Beav, It happened to me at your age and it is discrimination to not hire you because of age, disability, etc. BUT, the burden of proof is upon you. They get away with it all the time.
There is no Industry left in our area anymore, most of them have moved to Mexico for the cheap labor, and not we have a huge work force with no where to go.
Where does it end?
It doesn't

interestingly enough, the government (at both state and federal levels) is very willing to help you to get into the business of being a small business.
if you take the time to look into it, you'll find low-interest government backed start-up loans, business programs through the higher education state systems (taxes keep tuition cheap for state residents), even free or very low-cost business training programs in certain areas and on-line. plus lots and lots of free user-friendly guidance and advice on how to get into the process.

it's out there, and most of it is provided by that same government we all love to hate.
start being positive, and take a look!

I'm meeting with DVR next week.
I know it's out there, that's why I'm taking advantage of it.
What I don't need is e-mails telling me that "all you BBB's who have been dodging the taxes are going to pay now." Who's been dodging? I never knew it existed. I know, ignorance is no excuse.
That's pretty positive. Think it might have come from a PO'd manufacturer?
I posted before, if it didn't get axed, that I'm closing down until I meet with the pros who can teach me how to do it right, so I don't have to be the target of someones scare tactics. I'll let the gov't set me up. Seems they'll even set up a website if they think that there is a viable market.
What pisses me off is that for 3 years I sold lures at little or no profit exclusively on this board. I stepped up every time that there was an auction, or fundraiser that needed donations.
But now I get threats because I probably owe the gov't a couple hundred dollars.
I don't think that this topic was brought up by accident, or just out of curiosity, I think it was a warning shot.
Seems everybody is a business expert all of a sudden.

IT IS A FREE MARKET!!!!!!!!! Live with it.

How WalMart got brought up in this discussion is beyond me.

I agree with what the Guest and Worrall said above.

Plus we are talking about 10 basis points here...it's not the end of the world.

I agree, it's not a big deal at all, part of doing business. We are going to see more and more baits come from out of the country, why? Because they can make a bait as good as we can for 1/3rd the price. If all of us knew which baits currently on the market came from overseas it would be a BIG SURPRISE for many.

I got to thinking about this more and more as I was going through a Gross Margin analysis for the pharmaceutical wholesaler I am now working for today...along with a pricing analysis.

10 basis points is not much at all...we throw 10 - 30 basis points around like it is nothing for our customers...and this industry I am in, has one of the TIGHTEST margins of any industry.

We need to have GM = 3.5% roughly to break even for a month/year...our margins on a GOOD month are 3.7 - 4.2.

I just dont get all this fuss over 10%.

Actually I love Wal-Marts, I think they are one of the good things going here in the U.S. Cheap prices, great selections, I can get my food, oil change, pick up some clothes, all in 40 minutes.

This is something that I lose ZERO sleep over.

I will ALWAYS buy from Wal-Mart, as they are the best stores in the U.S. I have no problems with items made over seas. Hell almost everything is these days. They might be assembled in the U.S. but most mass produced items are made overseas, which is cool with me. Until we can figure out a way to produces items as cheap as other countries, then I see no problem with letting them do the work.

"I just dont get all this fuss over 10%"

how much fuss would you guys make if your boss comes in and tells you hes lowering your pay 10%? thats basiclly what were talkin about... i had someone tell me about this excide tax, i asked a accountant about it who knew nothing of it. i guess its one of those laws that is there, but alot of folks were not aware of it. its not that anyone is dodging it, its basiclly that some of us have now been made aware of it, and realize this is 10% less money we will be making. yes its just part of doing business, yes it is peoples jobs to know the tax laws. but there also is nothing wrong with a little venting about losing 10% of your income that you hadnt planned on. plain and simple its another cost that we will just have to deal with thats all! but before everyone starts thinking this is a bunch of senless whining...think about your boss coming in today and telling you hes lowering your pay 10%
