Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Erie Dearie Presentation

Two summers ago I fished with a newbie on a very highly pressured lake in SW MI. I had some 6" suckers and he put one on a big Erie Dearie and started flipping it out. Man, he had follow after follow, though no strikes. I was using cranks and bucktails with no follows at all. His bait was sure a hottie that day. I thought that if he did get a good strike, he would probably lose the fish due to the weakness/bendyness of the hook. Any thoughts?

I beleive it was 1995 or 96 that a guy from Ohio took first place in the Vilas County Muskie marathon using an erie dearie and a minnow on Trout lake. He wasnt muskie fishing - just fishing with what he was familiar with using.Since then Ive used them several times and caught four muskies between 44" & 46" on the ame setup.A lady client of mine who was in her late sixties and had arthritis got a beautiful 48" fish on one. Have had better action on them when the dearie makes contact with the bottom and is then pulled up for a foot or so and allowed to drop back and recontact the bottom.Definately change the hook.I use a VMC4/0. Have had no strikes with it when it is just swimming in the water column- perhaps others have-I should use it more because it has been productive on an hour for hour basis, but I use something similar but larger that seems to do better.Incidently it doesnt seem to make much difference if the live bait is alive or dead if used in the manner described.
