MS NBC reports that state governors of states bordering Canada are pushing Homeland Security to back off on the requirement to have a passport to re-enter the US next year. If this is an issue for you, now would be a good time to let your state's elected officials know about your concerns.

In my opinion ( if it matters to anyone ) just get the passport, It just makes life crossing Borders that much easier,

On our recent trip to St.Lucia people who had a U.S. Passport just flew through Customs (In and out bound) where folks who just had a Certified Birth Certificate and Drivers License had a delay up to 1/2 hour while they were questioned.

The new issued passports are $97.00 and good for 10 years that's only $9.70 per year

Yep, just get the passport, its the best way to go. I have traveled out of the country many times to many places and it is much less a hassel if you have a passport.

Last June I went to Wabigoon. I pulled out my passport and was immediately instructed to pull into the first stall and proceed into the office. I have no past issues with any police juridictions- ever! They found nothing in their search, but then there was nothing to find.
We got the sense that if I would not have had a passport we wouldn't have been pulled over.

In my opinion, it is a WASTE OF MONEY. I have been going up to Canada for years without problem, without having one. I would like to keep it that way!

Steve Van Lieshout, it could a random check. I'm sure that out of a certain amount of traffic, so many are pulled over - regardless of ID type.

A passport is much more difficult for a person to obtain and copy that is why the border guards like them. Anybody can get a driver’s license and it doesn't tell if that person is a citizen of the country where issued. All it states is that is a resident of that state with a license to drive.

I would just get the passport and be done with it. It is the best ID out there, If you gone anywhere the passport is always the ID that they will take!
