Posts: 1188 Location: Iowa | What makes a so called "Honey Hole" a honey hole...to someone it may be a great spot that they always seem to be on the right lake or in that spot at the right time and see a fish or stick a fish but to others that may be the worst spot on the lake or think that it is not as great of lake as another one might be...to some it may seem as though not many people really know about it and try as they might people still find out about it or already know about it...it only takes one person who is in the right place at the right time using the right lure to spoil a so called honey hole to someone but just another lake or spot to someone else...then they think it is spoiled...who is to blame then...and who are the people you can really trust with the news of the so called honey hole...people outside the so called "loop" really don't know what a great lake or spot really is there...they just come and go hoping to share the thrill of catching a muskie and then being excited enough about it to tell someone who they might think would love to share to excitement of catching that fish you just released...any thoughts on this... Location: Altoona, IA | Any lake or spot that you have supreme confidence in is what it is to me, you will fish harder as well because of the confidence in the spot/lake and in turn catch more fish.

I used to Bass fish a lot. There was a private lake that a guy would let me fish for a $5.00 fee. On one point, there was a tree stump in about three feet of water, and every time I went to the lake and cast a Jig or Worm to that stump, Bam! Spring, Summer, and Fall, like clock-work. I have yet to find a Muskie spot that consistant. I've got hundred yard strips that I know fish are holding to, but sometimes you'll see 14, and sometimes 1. If I ever find a Muskie spot like that Bass one, I'll be bringing the video camera, and I'll look like the pros on TV. Good luck everybody.

Posts: 696 Location: Northern Illinois | I fish a bass lake in my area and use a particular that is just money. My partner is the only person that truly knew about this lure. Then one day we decided to tell another buddy who we work with and now the world knows about the lake and the lure. If you have a honey hole and tell it to your most trusted and loyal friends! You don't want to make it everyone's "honey hole"!

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I think when you define Honey Hole, there is a bunch of issues that all have to fall into place. There may be many other people who know about the location, but don't know the intricasies of the location. They may raise/catch a fish there one time, never to see another again...but continue to fish it in the same manner as they did before. Not a honey hole, but a check point. You, on the other hand, might have found a certain wind condition, a specific turn/breakline you follow, lure choice/presentation that you consistently make contact with fish... I cannot put a percentage on it because it all depends on time of year, time of day, weather etc. But...those spots exist...you know the location well, you know what makes a fish show itselft/bite, and you can repeatedly do it when conditions are correct for that spot. THAT is a honey hole!! If conditions are not right for the spot, it becomes a check point if nothing else is working on your other "honey Holes"

Posts: 2865 Location: Brookfield, WI | Make sure you watch the amount of honey you eat. Winnie the Pooh ate too much honey, and then got stuck in that hole. If I remember my A.A. Milne correctly, Rabbit couldn't push him out, and Chritopher Robin had to blow his fat a$$ out of the hole with a stick of dynamite. Kevin Moderation as part of the plan.

Posts: 8834 | Its that spot that you ignore when other anglers are around, pretend it's not there when fishing out of someone else's boat, and generally avoid unless all your other spots aren't producing that day or it's one of those perfect condition days where you just HAVE TO fish that spot... Maybe its just me, but those special spots only get fished once in a while. I had a spot like that on a local strip mine lake I called "the crappie spot"... Pretty non distinct looking at it, but when the water was really clear you could just barely see a log in the water, down about 8 feet. About a cast length off the end of that log was the rest of the tree, the top of which sat about 8 feet below the surface. The trick was to cast about 20 feet past the tree with a deep diving crankbait, 15 cranks on the reel and then twitch the bait a few times. 6 feet left or right and you'd never see a fish, but if you went right over the top it was magic. HUGE slabs, every other cast. Best day on that spot was 16 fish in an hour and a half, 9-14"... After that I figured it would be better to fish it for about 10 minutes when nobody was around and then forget it was even there the rest of the time. Don't want to ruin a good spot...

Posts: 155 Location: North Metro | Interesting question. For me, many of my favorite spots are perennial producers during certain times of the year. Many of my favorite fishing areas are scorned by some of the people I fish with because we never seem to catch fish there at that time... Sort of funny I guess. At least it keeps my buddies from pressuring it when I'm not fishing with them... hehehehe....
