Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Opener is a couple weeks away here, so when season opens here, water temps could be in the 60's, so I start as if it's Summer. What's your chosen presentation on the opener, and is it water temp related or more a matter of where you feel the fish are as a seasonal factor?
Opener here in Rhinelander I'm throwing gliders and topwater working both faster than many might, and some twitch baits over the tops of the new cabbage. Jigs too, of course, in the new cabbage. |

Location: Pewaukee WI | Topwaters and also a jigs in a few special spots. I read over an article by Mr. Worrall about using a spinning rod for jigs. I was a bit skeptical as I havn't used a spinning reel in years but I rigged up my shimano 4000 and tried it out in my pond and I think its going to work better than my flippin stick as it picks up line a lot quicker. thanks i'll try her out

| With the warm weather this April and the early ice-out the opener in the MN Metro is going to resemble late June and I will be throwing everything and anything regardless of size. |

| Fargo-Moorhead Muskies Inc. has a get together on the MN opener every year. I used to downsize my lures a bit, as the water was still cooler. I don't anymore, as there are always fish caught using the same tactics as you would use any other time of the year. Last year fish were caught on Believers, Suicks, Bulldogs, Shallow Invaders, Surface baits, etc. Two years ago on opening day, I noticed a guy who writes for Esox Angler throwing a 10 inch Jake. I would use my confidence bait, whatever it was, and not worry so much about the time of year. I think my first cast this year will be with a Lungen Tale-Double in Walleye pattern. Wish me luck. |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | When season opens, I start twitching everywhere. (body shakes, arms spasms, head ticks, etc) and somehow that makes the lure just dance in the water. If my twitching stops, I then try to jumpstart myself again by throwing spinners all over the place...but that gets kind of expensive when I forget to attatch them to a line but throw them anyway.

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Unless there is a huge warm-up I will probably fish as if it were a normal spring at the start. I usually run with my "spring" patterns through most of June anyway, and I don't see the water temps being over 65.
Regardless, the first three baits out of my box nearly every year are Mepps Musky Killers, 6" Twitch Baits, and of course the Top Raider. All of these baits will catch fish from the opener on.
Location wise, I may start out a tad deeper than normal, I would expect the weedlines to be the center of activity with the spawn long ago gone. |

| I may just jig fish all year for muskies! I keep threating to, so why not start on the opener?
I know I'll probably have a small sucker or two out trailing the boat. And if not jigging, I'll be tossing small Boo Tails, twitching a Husky Jerk or a Slammer, and maybe Slow working a Suick. If I can find a good Top Raider, I may have it ready for action. Man, I need to get the other 10 fixed. Thanks to Theedz, I still have one that has the weight attached yet. Black and Orange. |
