That calculates to almost 56lbs. Must have been one heck of a fish. Nice to see a 13 year old get a fish like that.

Great for the kid......now is that kid going to be unhappy for the rest of his life because he couldnt hang the fish on the wall???? You would think so the way people at the Spring hearings talked....sounded like the only way kids could enjoy fishing is if they could catch a fish and hang it on the wall. Great to hear the kid got a giant, he'll have a nice replica I imagine!

Wow, each year GB and more specifically, Depere is seeing some awefully large fish caught. One thing I've been seeing at Gander is alot of anglers looking for the biggest Rapala's for "walleye" trolling Depere. One guy actually just came out and said..."I troll Ernies". When I say that that season is closed...."What's wrong with trolling for big walleyes?". So I'm getting the feeling that alot of anglers are "pre fishing". My hope is that the DNR can come up with a solution to protect spawning and prespawn musky.

I've been hearing of alot of mid-to upper 40's fish being caught up there this spring.

Hogzilla!!! That kid is going to be grinning for years with a sweet fish like that. If he doesn't become a die hard muskie angler there's something wrong with him! LOL!

Truly a big fish, and must have been exciting for the kid.

Pointer, Green Bay season is closed right now, so I don't know why he should be disappointed.

There are definately big fish in this system!

In trying to be consistant, I really think we should not be glorifying these accidently caught, out of season fish. Yes they are great fish, but why the replica's, like the one caught last year I saw in Joe Fittante's ad? It doesn't count, so why get a replica made? What does it mean? Why not get a replica then of a fish you saw on a follow? Heck, why not just get a replica of a fish you never even saw? There's really no difference. I don't get it.

I will not offer congratulations to anyone that caught a fish by accident, and out of season, anywhere.

Anybody targetting these fish out of season should be severly fined, and lose priveledges. I fish for eyes up there alot, and know many guys that do. I don't know anyone usning Ernies.

I agree (for once) with Shep. I think there's alot of people who don't see the wrong in fishing Musky out of season...I've heard this saying over and over again this spring ..."It's Catch and Release"...No, it's not. The season is closed. I also agree that Fittante and Eric Haataajaajja are doing nothing but glorifying it. Is it ok to fish for out of season musky as long as you CPR and have a relipica???...No, it's not ok.

Man, this is like twice in a week, that GMG and I agreed on something! Is this a trend?

Don't get me wrong, I am not putting Joe Fittante down for creating the replica. He is conducting business. I do disagree with the replica being made, and displayed as if this was a legally caught, and CPR'd fish. It wasn't, and we shouldn't be glorifying it as such!

www.buyShepsLund.com. Hee Hee! It's in the Journal starting today.

Shep,

This fish was caught by a Pro Walleye anglers nephew out of the pro's boat ( the Pro doesn't fish Muskies, he fishes PWT and FLW), trolling cranks on the Bay for 'eyes and NOT targeting muskies at all. He was truly excited and took great care to handle the fish swiftly and carefully. He has every right to be excited and every expectation to have the pics posted and congratulations issued. This is a clear case of an 'accidental' yet still exciting fish, one I'm sure the DNR will also use in promotion of the Green Bay success. I know if I pop a 50 off lake George fishing 'eyes on the opener the first Saturday of May, you'll see the pictures. You won't have to congratulate me, but I'll get over that I guess.

What in God's name do you mean, 'doesn't count'? to that young angler, it certainly does. The fish was caught and released within the law exactly, and was real as you are. This isn't a fish he intends to enter into any contests or look for any 'glory' from, he didn't pretend anything of the sort; you might notice I PERSONALLY put the post up. It's a BIG fish, and that's that. I bet you a buck if Sunshine had caught that fish while prefishing the PWT on Winnebago and I posted the info, the reaction would be different. the key isn't that the fish was 'illegal', it wasn't. It was captured entirely by accidental chance, and was CPR as the law requires. The DNR used the pictures of the giant caught there last year in the presentation about GB Muskies at the Symposium, they considered that fish a truly amazing specimen, it was released as required, and was not a negative thing in any way.

You don't need to state the obvious here, I wouldn't post the fish if there was ANY question that it was taken absolutely accidentally. No one is 'glorifying' anything except that an exceptional fish was captured.

I understand your comment about 'intent', this wasn't anything of the sort.

I did not accuse the kid, or those he was fishing with, of targetting muskies. I know fish are caught by accident all the time, and I agree, it was very exciteing for the kid. I never said it shouldn't be exciting. What I do believe, is that because it was caught by accident, and OOS, that no congratulations should be offered. Just the way I see it.

You catch one by accident, I'll turn my head, and not even acknowledge it. Kinda like when the pitcher with a no-hitter gets shunned in the dugout after about 5 innings!

Sorry if I made it sound that way also....never thought the kid caught it intentionally.

My main concern with this fishery is that it's not regulated hard enough because I know there's alot of people using Walleyes as an excuse to Musky fish...the thing is, it's getting more popular with each picture and each story.

GMG,
The story is real, the fish was real, and it makes no sense to pretend it didn't happen or shun the fish or angler because 'someone else' might fish for muskies illegally there. The DNR can tell if someone is targeting muskies, and the warden will ticket offenders using his/her best judgement. If I catch a 16# 'eye on Pelican in March fishing pannies on 2 pound line and a crappie jig, take a picture, and post it, do you honestly think that's promoting poaching? Come on, this is a bit over the edge. Your point is well taken, but misapplied in this case. If indeed the fishery is well known for big muskies, confirming that they are there shouldn't encourage anyone else to break the law any more than a nice straight stretch of pavement should encourage anyone to do 30 over the speed limit.

And no, it isn't illegal to take pictures of the fish. never has been, and shouldn't be.

I'm probably wrong but isn't taking pictures of the fish out of season illegal? I mean if you catch one out of season I thought you had to release it immedietly.Taking a photo would seem to me keeping it out of the water longer than you were suppose too.
