Posts: 691 Location: nationwide | As I sat in the Emergency Room Saturday evening watching the doctor remove a rather large Mustad from the area where the meat of the thumb meets the wrist I got to thinking if anybody else has had mishaps in the off-season that required a trip to the emergency room. I was hanging a lure in the rafters of the furnace room when one of the spreader hooks became attached to me while the tail hook was attached to the rafter. After looking at the lure and the hook in my hand I gently reached up and un hooked the lure from the rafter and walked over by the wife and told her "I think we have a little problem" with the lure hanging off my hand. After cutting the hook from the lure and trying to push it through, which was actually pushing it deeper, I decided I better let somebody else give it a shot who knew the ins and outs of tendon and muscle location. The best part was when the nurse asked me if I felt safe at home. I kinda looked up and said "other than me doing damage to myself, yea, I feel pretty safe there". I did not get the feeling she was impressed. So anybody else got ony lure building or off season emergency room stories???? Corey Meyer

Posts: 619 Location: Verona, WI | Corey, I have had two similar instances. The first involved my golden retriever, Touchdown. I used to store all of my lures on a wooden laundry rack, the kind that are made of dowels that are pretty flimsy but just the right size for lures. Dangerous but no kids at that time so I didn’t think it was a big deal. As I drive home from work one day I get a frantic call from my wife saying that Touchdown has a lure stuck in her nose. Apparently she had bumped into the rack, tipped it over, and one of the hooks on a handmade bait had gone completely through her nose. I get home and my wife is sitting on the dog to keep her still and holding the bait so it wouldn’t put pressure on the dog’s nose. Thankfully the barb was all the way through so I was able to just cut the hook. Dog was fine – no scars and no bleeding. My second incident involved me putting a 5/0 treble into the palm of my hand. After the dog incident I moved my lure racks to the ceiling so the only one that could get to them was me. As I reached to put a minnowbait on the rack one of the hooks got caught. Unfortunately the lure stopped when the hook stopped by my hand didn’t and I ended up with a 9” lure in the palm of my hand. It was weird. It didn’t hurt and I calmly took the lure to the garage, got my hook cutters, and cut most of the hook away. Now I decide to go Macgiver and get on a knife, a pliers, and some hot water as I am going to take this thing out myself. My wife is a nurse and to this day thinks I am insane for this. It took one push on the hook to convince me to go to the hospital where they did exactly what I was going to do, push the hook through. Only they have painkillers….. Be careful. Shane

Location: Athens, Ohio | No, but I have to be careful carrying lures from my boat garage to the house and back for sharpening, new hooks, and such. I have a dog who just loves to jump, and he can jump neck-high. Early in his life we'd play and he'd jump at my hands. With a bait that has several treble hooks on it in my hands, we've had some close calls during his sneak attacks. m

Posts: 4266 | Been there. done that. Next time I'll let the bucktail and the Visegrips just fall to the ground and not try to grab it on the way down. Had one funny mishap when the rod fell off of my rotissere motor, and I awoke to 4 lures Envirotexed to the basement floor. They are still there, and I chuckle when ever someone tries to pick them up. I love novacaine Beav
