16th over 2 inches rain late last week, today was the second front moving through this week, however not much rain for either, sunny until late aft, with the most activity for 3 groups fisherman coming before 1pm water cond in Beaver branch murky, but good for spring, murkier in the aft. ?did they open the gates and start drawing?, it was supposed to have been on a slow rise X 3 days, can still be rising and drawing with high water coming in though licking R, muddy in lower reaches feeding the lake, however most flows coming in have cleared. Starting at marina, coves down to, and including clay lick, color was good, clarity about perfect for good shallow water bite, we were happy with what was in this area and stayed, but might have benefitted by working more of the big flats down lake than just these...other groups saw more than we did. weeds notably available in well defined patches, producing action for some, not us. these weeds are as good for early season as I have seen, great spot patches ALL OVER THIS AREA, that should hold and produce a bunch of fish this spring, if conditions stay settled pull baits performing better than rattle baits today in 2-6 feet, more fish seen by groups in weeds 4-6 feet, sledges getting some action, but not bit, probably any pull bait that stirs a good amount of water will produce ok, our boat boated one 35 on a chartreuse pull bait in 2-3 feet of very murky water, at high noon with bright sun, on a flat with a bottom of scattered rock, mud and sand, no weeds or sticks of note where this fish ate, it was kind of bare, and....flat. Weeds looked so good we spent a fair amount of time on transition/shoreline travel routes with weed patches. This was not productive for us today in the afternoon when we did it. Probably should have spent more time on shallow flat areas, fish must not have been travelling much. bass fisherman seeing limited bass, contacting musky in 4-6 feet also on bass lures. water temps, 49's to very low 50's in this portion. still early in the migration, shad not in heavy supply in shallows yet where we were, but that can change quickly watch out for backs of live coves being colder than the rest of the cove for the next few days, I don't like this condition and move the boat out a little to start fishing out where the water warms up to the standard cove temperature. water still cool enough that sunlight in the mid day may help increase the activity level-do fish at noon. cold front coming in but if water is warming in shallows fish should be catchable, if water clears in coves, boat pressure may move fish out a little as the day goes on in heavy traffic areas all in all looks like a good pre spawn bite ahead if conditions remain stable | |||
