Location: Iowa City, Iowa | Hi Fellow Musky/Muskie Addicts!
Casting reels which can be reeled in reverse are called "direct drive models:. Ambassadeur 5500 D (green, I think) & the later 5500 DA (red with cupping side) are examples. I believe they were designed for bass fishing in heavy cover. Production ended about 1980. Does anyone use either model for Musky fishing? Upgraded gears & bearing kits are available, so modernization is possible.
Disclaimer: I do NOT need another or better reel. I like my Calcutta 400/401's, especially the te models. Nevertheless, I am curious about the reels.
An idle mind, .....

| The Abu "D" reels were indeed direct drive, the only way that drag would go out is if you allowed the handle to spin backwards. They were affectionatly known as knuckle busters! I would not want to use one for a fish the size of a musky unless I didn't value my fingers!
FYI the gears can not be changed in these because they used a gear that was unique to the D reels.
Abu also made the D reel in a champaign gold color. If anybody here has one of these PLEASE let me know as I need one bad for my collection and would be willing to make a serious trade or buy it out right! |

Location: Iowa City, Iowa | Thanks for your input & your advice on the 5500 DA for muskies. Do you know whether Don Iovino's gear & bearings kits work with either the 5500 D or 5500 DA? The upgradekit in a 2500 C is a fabulous user-reel for bass.
I tried to email you at your posted address & it was not deliverable.

| I'm not sure what kit Iovino is selling but unless it says that it is for the "D" reels I do not think that it would work for a "D" reel.
Sorry about the Email the one listed is very old, if you need to get ahold of me you can private message me. |
