private or not you better check with the DNR before you do ANYTHING as far as stocking.

MN Muskie farm can give you a price on muskies. They usually don't have different sizes, but for fingerlings 8-14 inch range it was ~10 a fish.

Is it a law that you have to check with the DNR to stock a private lake?

If not I don't see why anyone would need to ask if they are willing to buy them. However it may be smart to make sure your pond won't winterkill or get tips on management from the DNR.

"Private" can mean a couple things...is it a private pond or lake solely owned by one person? if so, no you don't need to ask....if it is a "private" lake meaning no public access with multiple property/home owners on it you definitely need to ask....

You should be able to get different sizes, just depends on when you get them.

1-4 inches? They should be this size around July
4- 8 inches? They should be this size in Sept - Oct
8 -14 inches? They should be this size in spring (almost a year old)

Most places will only supply them in the early spring or fall when survivablility is greater.

I would check with the DNR before you do anything. Usually you have to get a transport permit from the DNR when you stock anything. They're easy to get and free, and it also keeps things on the up-and-up.

What treats said.....you NEED a permit to import them into the state, and I think MN farm will require one before allowing you do ship.

Do it on the up and up.

We purchased a northern, a tiger, and a pure strain from the Minnesota Muskie farm a few years ago for an aquarium. Cost us something like $50 for all three. They were around 9 inches long at the time. I was fortunate that the owner was headed to stillwater, and brought the fish with him....and that saved a bunch on shipping.

If you are going to stock them in a lake even if it is private without the DNR's approval make sure that there is not an inlet or outlet to the lake. If there is you may have just introduced a fish species into all the lakes around you.
