Capt. Larry Jones of Mostly Muskies Charter ran a Muskies First Tournament at Lake Chautauqua Ny. A few years ago. It was a great success and everyone had a very good time. Larry is now in the process of putting together another “CATCH AND RELEASE” tournament with no judge boats at Chautauqua Lake. It will be held on October 7th and 8th, 2006. Arrangements are being made with Snug Harbor Restaurant for Steak Dinner Saturday night and Chicken Wings & Hamburgers for Sunday. The Raffle Table will be on Saturday Night, all proceeds will go to the Prendergast Hatchery Baitfish Fund, along with all money left over after Tournament/Dinner costs. All prizes will come from donations from local businesses around Lake Chautauqua and Musky Tackle Co.'s. This Will Not Be A Cash Tournament, Prizes Only, the intent is to raise money for the purchase of Baitfish for the Pendergast Hatchery. In order to have this Tournament with Dinner format and still give a sizeable donation to the Hatchery Fund we will need to charge $50 entry fee per person. The stage for all of us to give something back to the Great Chautauqua Lake Musky Fishery, purchase Baitfish so that the Musky Fry can be grown into yearlings giving them a much better chance of survival. Those who can't fish the Tournament can still support the Hatchery Baitfish Purchase Fund by sending in a donation, all donation money will go 100% directly into the Fund. PLEASE send your Tournament Entry Fee of $50 to Mostly Muskies,268 Harrison Ave, Buffalo, NY 14223. For more info got to: http://www.mostlymuskies.com/reports.htm

Your private support of this effort in "giving back to the lake's hatchery" to continue its long history as a World Class Muskie Fishery is very much appreciated!!! It's time for every one of us muskie fishermen to "walk the walk" (instead of just "talking about it" and then buying a fishing license). It will take cooperative Public/Private Partnerships and active volunteer participation from us all if we are to grow our muskie industry into what it is capable of being. Lake Chautauqua, NY had the very 1st muskie hatchery in the country. The lake still yields outstanding catches, and the 2004 PMTT World Championship's "all time greatest numbers" are a testament to that fact. Continuing efforts BY muskie fishermen FOR muskie fishing to assist and BOOST our State Departments of Conservation capability of growing bigger fingerlings for stocking produces more big muskies faster... Can you think of a better WIN-WIN cause for muskie fishing? Even if you cannot join us at the tournament, your donation sent to "Mostly Muskies c/o Prendergast Hatchery Fund, 268 Harrison Ave, Buffalo, NY 14223" is seriously appreciated. MUSKIE FISHERMEN UNITE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All muskies hunters all over the U.S. should be excited about this news! NYDEC has gotten a grant for Cornell University to begin a research study at Lake Chautauqua Ny. into the cause and possible prevention of “Redspot” disease in its muskies. To date very little is known about the disease. Redspot first appeared here about 1 year after Ny had taken Northern Pike from Presque Isle Bay Pa. to their Ny hatchery to develop Tiger Muskies, which are a cross between a natural muskie and a northern. Their goal was to develop a sport fish that would give a strong fight like a natural muskie but would be less hard to catch like a northern. Also, they hoped they would have a faster growth rate which they did. Redspot appears on a muskie as an outside open red sore usually about the size of a quarter. This visual sore goes much farther inside of the muskie than the eye can see and has the effect of cancer spreading throughout the inside attcking vital organs. Redspot does cause death in many cases and in some the muskies recover and show signs of healed over redspot sores. The disease had killed many muskies in Lake Chautauqua back in the 1980’s. Over the past 6 years or so the redspot disease has been on the rise again with approximately 10-12% of the adult muskies in the Spring nets showing signs of the disease. In 2000 18% showed signs of healed sores. Since the 1980’s and the devastation from the redspot disease. Lake Chautauqua’s muskie population has been rebuilt through stocking from the Prendergast Hatchery located at the lake. Today approximately 75% of the muskies in the lake are from stocking. Leaving 25% from natural reproduction in the lake. Those of you who are old enough to remember know how redspot can destroy a lake of its muskies. For those of you who aren’t. Please understand that it is one of the few things that can wipe out a muskie population. The important thing to realize here is this. MUSKIES DO NOT REPOPULATE IN A FEW YEARS. It takes muskies 10-20 years to reach trophy size. Therefore, if a fishery were to undergo a bad episode of redspot. It could be 10 years of hard work to get it back. So I think it is BIG news that Cornell University is going to do this long needed research. Kudos to the NYDEC! Officials do know it is either a viral or bacterial disease but that's about it. Cornell University researchers will be with the Prendergast Hatchery crews when they pull up the muskie nets on Chautauqua this Spring. The hatchery crews will be doing their normal routine of milking the males and females along with checking for clipped fins and recording measurements. The University will be taking DNA swabs from the redspot sores of the muskies for research. They are going to try and determine the following: If it’s a virus,if it is caused by the environment and the water,is it from fish to fish contact, if it is from spawning,if it is something they are doing at the hatchery or if it is a genetic problem being transferred down through the eggs. The bottom line to this post is to shed some light onto why Capt. Larry Jones is having his Tournament this October. We want to support this hatchery as much as we can. We want the state to know we appreciate its efforts. We want the state to know that we love and care about the muskies in Lake Chautauqua. I have personally been in touch with the NYDEC for years and they are quite excited about Larry’s upcoming tournament. Thank you, Jim Ott

We now have 25 entrees sent in so far, keep them coming.I'm presently reviewing if we will need to put a limit on the number of fishermen that can enter the Chautauqua Lake Pendergast Hatchery Benefit Tournament.NY State DEC will requie a permit if we go over 150 entrants. The launch facilities at Pendergast State Launch will be real cramped with 150 entrees, even if half the boats launched from other launches on the lake. The capacity at the Snug Harbor Restaurant will be at its limit with 150 entrants as well.If we went bigger then 150 entrants we would need to get that permit, launch from Long Point State Park and go with a bigger facility for dinner and raffle. For now we will see how the signup continues,if the entrees come in in numbers,we can adjust to the bigger venue, but by the end of March we will need to set the limit and stay with the decission.
