I've had great luck with single bucktails, but zip with tandems. Am I fishing them wrong or in the wrong situations? If you like tandems, what brand do you prefer?

| Otter,
I have never noticed much difference between a single and a tandem. I tend to go with the tandems on lakes with a lot of small pike. If I fish with a single on these lakes I ended up spending more time removing snakes than Musky. Also, early in the year when I first start fishing tails I will try smaller lures so again, I might stay away from the Tandems. Overall though I fish them pretty much both the same.
I prefer VooDoo Tails, check out there website at

"Otter, I use both single and tandem with good results. I guess it depends on the situation. I run smaller 5" Sugartale in the spring, as the season goes on switch to the 7" and the 9". I use the tandems more on the lakes with a greater pike population, tends to keep the snakes off the line.

Tandems may be an advantage at night on clear water. Running just below the surface, it's a bigger target against the night sky.

Every type and size bucktail can be used to advantage depending on the situation: As previously noted larger bucktails will help avoid problems with small northerns, etc.The larger tandems also allow for greater bouyancy over shallow stucture.Over open water on clear lakes where Muskys are primarily sight feeders I like to combine blade flash with a larger tandem body to present a larger target. To prevent loss of speed trim away some of the interior hair as long as it doesnt downsize the general profile.By combining different color body sections a nice contrast can be acheived which I think is as important in bucktails as it is in cranks and jerks.Tandems also produce a subtle side to side body action that is missing in the singles.Big targets also help at night and when combined with a double blade can be a VERY productive in low light conditions. They do seem to more effective on systems that contain larger fish -I generally stick to singles on smaller "action" types of lakes.HC Meyer 7Islands Guide service Presque Isle Wi.
