Location: The Yahara Chain | How long have they been making the Luna? It seems to me that they used to make two different Millionaires…now I only find the cheaper Millionaire. Did the Luna replace the high end Millionaire? I know that the St Croix reel is a Millionaire with two small changes and I would buy a Millionaire over the St. Croix. Has anybody out there used both a Luna and a Millionaire? I was going to buy a Millionaire but should I wait and save some more money and get the Luna? Educate me, please.

Posts: 469 Location: Downers Grove, IL | I've used both and both are great reels. There isn't a drastic difference between them but I prefer the luna, especially because of the new handle and grips. It is a very comfortable reel. I also like the new thumb bar the runs across the entire spool. The upscale version on the Millionaire is the CV-z series. I found this link: http://allwatersfishing.com/product_info.php?products_id=9201. They both have the same gear ratio (5:1) and the CV-z has 1 extra BB. If you looking for feedback on the Luna shoot Jonesi a PM. He's been using them for 2 seasons now and has put them through their paces with pounders and XXX bucktails. Hope this helps, td Edited by thedude 4/27/2006 8:58 AM

Posts: 8834 | I've got the CVZ300A Millionaire. I've only got a season on it, but here's what I can tell you: 1. Out of the box its unbelievably smooth, and almost impossible to backlash. Just a solid comfortable reel. Makes me not like my Abu's anymore. 2. By the end of the season, though, it seemed to get a lot more backlash prone, and not quite as quiet as it was originally. Cleaned it and re-oiled it this winter, so we'll see if that helped. 3. One time the anti-reverse failed, almost like the reel didn't engage all the way -- hard pull on a glider sent the handle spinning backwards. It only happened one time and that was it. Chalk that up to ????????, because everything was in working order when I took it apart and cleaned it.

Posts: 469 Location: Downers Grove, IL | Addict, That is the same thing that happened to the one I used. The handle kept spinning backward under heavy pressure. Anti-reverse bearing? td

The lunas are a great reel...I sold my cvz 300 because I did not like them at all. I was talked into trying a luna...bought one and with a couple weeks had sold my Calcutta TEs and have all luna now. Pick one up at the store and play with the handle and such..you will see that it is a really "tight" reel. Have used them all spring and they are smooth. The handle is great as well...cannot say enough about the luna...Ben

Posts: 8834 | Dude, I thought of that, but how could it possibly be worn out after a season? I'm casting most of the time and using 4 different rods, so no one reel ever sees more than a few hours in a day... One thing I did notice when I cleaned it was that the AR bearing was just caked with grease, and not just in and on the bearing, but all around it. Fished it in some pretty hard rain a few times, so I'm hoping that it was just too much grease in the wrong places from getting wet a couple times. Other than that one time, though, it's been great.

Addict, you need to use anti reverse bearing grease on the Daiwas, thats why it slipped, for some reason the grease they use doesnt work so well when its cold out. Take a brand new one out of the box, put it in the freezer for an hour and it will do the same thing, send it into Chuck Brod and he can change out the grease, or its easy enough to do yourself, just make sure you flush the old grease out. Reel Saver makes a good anti reverse grease. The lunas are very nice, basically a millionaire with a bigger handle and different finish and $30 more.

Posts: 63 Location: Indianapolis, IN | I purchased the CVZ300A a few years ago as well! My initial impression was this reel was truly the most impressive reel I had ever used! However after using this reel for 1 season something inside broke! I have had the reel repaired twice, spending over $100.00 on this reel! It still does not work correctly. In my opinion this reel is JUNK! Just my 2 cents! Todd

Ialso had troubles with the cvz, anti reverse took a crap and with bigger fish they would just peel line out even with drag cranked tight ,sent to diawa they said they fixed it, next big fish same thing, cant say if lunas will do the same but had the same drag problem with the avid ,spoke to the diawa reps at show couldnt answer question of why, and no i didnt oil the drag pads

Location: The Yahara Chain | Thanks for the responses guys. I have learned that the Luna will be replacing the Millionaire. So if anybody wants a Millionaire you should pick one up. I have decided to purchase a Luna.
