| I'm no pro but here's my take.......
For stright wire leaders: I love my little Du-Bro Quick Twist hoober-doober I bought as part of a leader-making kit from Rollie and Helen's. Comes with directions. I threw away the swivels and snaps that came with the kit, though, because I like better quality, i.e., 100# Berkley bearing swivels and the "small size" Stringease snaps.
For flourocarbon: Follow Extreme Mike's method which can be found searching thru the old M1 threads. I use only 80# Climax.
For sevenstrand: I use braided wire only 1) to make dedicated 30" leaders for jig/creature set ups and 2) for sucker rigs. A decent set of splitring pliars usually includes a crimping feature down on the handle. Just make sure you have the correct size sleeves for the wire you choose. (Note - some folks know how to actually tie (not crimp) sevenstrand. I've tried using the bowlin knot as shown in a pike/muskie tactics book I have, but, I've never been confident about the true strength of that knot so I went back to crimped sleeves.)
Use only top quality parts; don't take a chance with lower quality swivels or snaps or split rings. |

Location: Edina, MN | Get a DuBro tool for doing the single strand leaders. Got mine at Thornes. They sell several sizes based on the size wire you plan to use. I have 2. One for heavier jerk bait leaders 100lb and up and a second smaller one for lighter wire. For seven strand get a good crimp pliers in the size you plan to use. A cheezy crimper will leave you with questionable leaders that take longer to make. Follow the directions that come w/ the tools. |
