Ok. Here's a truly rookie question in honor of the "To post or not to post" thread. As part of the plan I want to work on my casting and bait working before the season opens. My sister lives on a lake here in Waukesha County so I can cast from shore before her pier's in. I want to jerk some cranks, crank some jerks, glide some globes, and walk some dogs.

Is it legal to throw baits out of season if you take the hooks off? How much would the lack of hooks affect the action of the baits? Would I still get a decent idea of how most baits work, or would the action be so affected by the weight differences that I would just be misleading myself?

Newbies unite.

Kevin

The trying to lose weight part of the plan is by far the least enjoyable. I'm hungry.

It's illegal to target any fish on the off season. Taking hooks off or not. You could say you were targeting Northerns, but the DNR may think otherwise. I definately wouldn't do this after the first weekend in March when game fish closes.

If there are no muskies in the lake I don't think it would be a problem, I know of one bait shop where he lets you try baits and rods and reels out before you buy them in a backwater pool off of a stream whenever the water is open.

Contact the local dnr and ask for an opinion in writing and have that opinion with you if they give you some guidelines for doing this. Is doesn't matter what anyone here tells you. You will be at the mercy of the DNR officer.

I wouldn't take the risk, honestly. Hooks or not it could still be considered fishing.

It may sound goofy, but I would check with your local YMCA and see if there is an off time when you could get in and use the pool. Yes, I know -- they're gonna think your nuts, but its a GREAT way to elarn lures as you can see them better than you ever will be able to in a normal situation.

I would definately contact the DNR and get something from them in writing if they say it is ok. If not I would maybe try to find local farm or some place with some water and see if they will let you cast. Good luck.

Very funny answers! I'll ask questions every day if I can get answers that include The Village People, Seinfeld, and Caddy Shack. Forget about muskies, I love pop culture. Maybe I'll try the local Swimtastic. Little fish swim in schools is their motto or something like that. My best friend's ex works at one. I'm sure she'd be thrilled to see me. What's the best way to set the hook on your friend's ex-wife, toward her or away from her? She probably goes about 120#. What kind of rod and line should I use? When you're a rookie, one question just leads to another.

I'll call the DNR about the no hook thing.

Now I can't stop laughing. I'm picturing huge bowls of tartar sauce, lemon wedges like footballs, frisbee size potato pancakes, and loaves of rye bread the size of Volkwagons. Now that would cure my hunger problem on a Friday night.

Kevin

The plan makes me hungry.

Yes indeedy! A series of posts as in the fledgling days of MF...brings back fond memories Hopeful dude, and thanks to you, some of us have found new life. Figured we could take this thing 'bout as far south as North Carolina before it gets yanked to the bottom bracket...anyhoos, yer menu sounds most excellent; all that is needed is a case of Coke Colas and a box or 10 of Pay Days and a desire to succeed. Good to see peeps of like mind; life is WAY TOO SHORT, thus wringing out every ounce of enjoyment should be our goal. Keep on asking those questions...can't promise you'll always get the right answer, but then again, who can know these things? So as to remain in a semi serious manner, call the warden and get their take on the original question...report yer findings...now I must rest...

I wondered how long it would take Sponger to find Hopeful, kindred spirits for sure. Sponger, nearly rolled off the sofa reading the 'battered' women thing to Sue, who honestly thought it was extremely funny--- 'cept she thinks you should roll her in whipped eggs first so's the coating stays fer th' trip...shows what muskie fishin' does to a good woman.

Steve,

I'm glad Sue mentioned the egg dip. I would also cut the cornmeal with some bread crumbs. I find the all corn meal coating a little too crunchy on ex-wives. They're also good broiled. A little lemon and melted butter and you'd think you're eating lobster.

Kevin

I like Paydays. Not long ago I found a Zagnut in a Walgreens. Like a butterfinger covered in toasted coconut. I ate five. I'm like that, so weight loss was made part of the plan.
