| I'm looking for a rod that is heavy enough to toss the larger baits in my arsenal - big soft plastics (Big Joe, Twin Fin) and big jerks (Deadhead, Phantom). Ideally, I would like to spend less than $200. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated? |

Location: Angola, IN | Talk to Keith at Professional Edge Rods. He's got killer stuff, at an even better price. I know you said under $200, and he's got stuff under that price, but if you spend a few more bucks, you can get the sweetest rod on the market....for about $240 I think. The same rods goes for $350+ from other rod builders.

| Keith does a great job, but not all rods are built alike.Each builder has a niche and NO, they are NOT the same.Some use handle kits while others use individual cork rings.Guides, guide placement, wrappings etc. can all be different for one reason or another.Blanks can be cut or the rod extended.Extensions.....Inside or outside?One is much stronger.I've been having customs made for 20 years and work for one now.You get what you pay for.Lots of choices in todays market.Ain't it grand!??? Steve
P.S. I'd be careful using a higher end blank with heavy baits.The walls of the blank are thinner, resulting in less weight, but also less durability. |

Location: Downers Grove, IL | i picked up an 8' heavy custom rod from thorne bros. this past fall. the guys there were a great help and steered me to a st. croix blank rather than the diamondback blank i thought i wanted. others can weigh in on this - but i believe that the diamondback blanks have thinner walls not conducive to heavier stuff that i wanted it for, and that over time, the diamondback blank wouldn't hold up to big bait chucking. i bought it to throw big weighted suicks, mag dawgs, etc. and this rod was PERFECT.
i upgraded the cork but went with standard guides - i think i paid $240.00. maybe more than you're looking to spend but if you're looking to use it for what i was, you won't be disappointed!

It is as light as my graphite rods with similar action and capable of throwing anything smaller than the S.S. Minnow. Price is around $110. Lifetime warranty. |

Location: Pewaukee, WI | That's right about the Maina rod. I've got one (7' 6"), a signature rod edition that has a detachable counterweight that screws into the butt of the rod. It supposedly allows you to throw lures up to 10 oz. with ease. I just bought it in December so I can't give an honest account of how it handles, but I'm looking forward to giving it a real work out in Canada this summer. |

| thats a great rod for lures up to about 8 oz...after that, it feels like it goin to break...

Location: Belgium | the best rod I've used so far for lures up to the mag dawg and possibly heavier is a 7'2" worrall musky rod, two piece, 1-5oz, line to 30lbs (???). Anyway, it's tough yet flexible enough to take the headshakes of a big fish |
