Subject: Honda vs Yamaha

Both are sold locally. I never looked into a Honda. Growing up Merc, Johnson, and Evinrude were the big 3. I just found out that all Honda has ever made is 4 strokes. Looking at a 20 to 25 4-stroke. Anyone have anything pro or con to say about the Hondas? I have used Yamahas in Canada. Very nice and dependable. Pull started every time. Looking for an electric start, getting older, bad back. Thanks for any help.

If you are upgrading from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke, take a look at how much both the Honda and Yamaha 4 strokes weigh compared to what you are taking off. A honda 4 stroke 25 weighs 155 to 184 depending on which you get. The Yamaha about 143 for the one I found... Based on me lifting and moving my 2 stroke 25hp, I'd say it weighs considerably less then either of those.. If you are putting the motor on a new boat it won't matter..

I have had both 4 stroke brands--a 200 Honda on an Alumacraft, and now a 150 Yamaha on a Key West. Both are great engines and I think you would be happy with either. But I had Honda first, and I guess I prefer them over Yamaha just a touch--but it's probably a personal preference type of thing. They are both ultra-quiet and run very smoothly. And it is true that the Honda will outweigh the Yamaha everytime in a comparable horsepower. But like mentioned above, if you have made the decision to go with a 4 stroke then the few pounds of weight difference between the two is irrelevant. In Florida it is VERY hard to find Honda delaers. They are here, but Yamaha outsells them 10 to 1, from what I can tell. In fact, Yamaha is the predominant engine in Florida. Jeez...the 4 stroke Yam's are everywhere.

I would personally go with the Honda, but most guys would probably take whatever the dealer cut them a better deal on--and they would likely be very happy wiith either.

Hondas are offered in 15, 20, 25 and 30 but the Yammies are a 15, 25 and then to a 40. I'm looking at a pair of Alumacrafts, one a 14.5 and the other a 16.5 Yukon. Both are tillers. Yukon weighs 250 lbs. more. The 16' Nadens in Ontario that we have used are equipped with a 20 2 stroke Yamaha. They are rated for a 40 hp. max. They weigh around 325 lbs. Both of us in the boat and our euipment, they go 23 mph wide open. The Alumacraft are rated for a 35 max ( 14 Fisherman) and a 50 hp max ( Yukon). I love the room in the Yukon but I will only be able to afford a 25. I don't think that is sufficient for that size boat. The Hondas have 2 cyl in the 20, but 3 in the 25. Will the 25 suck that mucch more gas??? Thanks.

Honestly I think you can't go wrong with any brand of 4 stroke...we have a 50 hp Merc 4 stroke on our cabin boat and it rocks...I've only heard great things about the Yammy 4 strokes as well as the Suzi's...
There are some GREAT deals out there from Marinas on used 4 strokes if you take the time to call them up or look on websites...we got our 50 hp 1 year old with basically no hours on it for 40% of retail....

for example ...mw marine near milwaukee wi has a 2001 25 hp 4 stroke merc with power trim/tilt, electric start for about 2300
i'm sure that could be talked down under 2k ...

Seems the Hondas locally that were available are long shafts and the boat I want to tide me over has a 16" transom. A nearby dealer has a short shaft 2000 Johnson 20 or 25 hp 3 cyl. electric start for $2100. It is a 2 stroke. Anyone know anything of these??

Make sure that you ask around about parts availability. Yamaha dealers are a lot easier to find on the road than Honda dealers. Keep in mind resale as well. I know of dealers that will not take a Honda in trade due to their lack of available parts. Just do some research to find out about the details with your dealer. Where I worked and sold boats we were not allowed tro take a Honda in trade.

hey Bruce, that 3 CYL Johnson is a keeper, very good motor. From what I remember they might be heavier then a regular 2cyl version of same motor, but very good motors. Not sure on the price... if it looks good though might not be bad... If I could find a 35hp 3cyl johnson that I could afford i'd upgrade from my 40 2cyl in a second...

Going with the Honda for a couple of years. Will get a 40 hp in 2 or 3 with possibly a new Lund then too. I found out the Honda warranty is transferable so someone will have one year on it if I sell after season 2. Anyone use a transom saver when trailering??

The Honda 30 HP is the same size as the 25 HP. If you can swing the extra bucks, you'll be happy to have the few extra ponies. I had the 30 Honda on my old boat, and it worked like a champ. I've got a 50 Merc. 4-stroke on my new boat; it also so is great. Both are WAY better than the 25 Merc 2-stroke I had on a previous boat.

Going with a Honda, 2006, but only a 15 horse for 2 years til i get that Lund Classic, or keep my Naden and up to a 30 or 40 hp. I cannot go any higher right now. I'm really getting ansy. The motor has been ordered but has not arrived at the dealer. I realy want to get on the water and see how smooth and quiet these 4's are. And see how many trips I can get out of the tank of gas. I am assuming two trips. Think spring!!!!
