Hey gang. I'd like to share a few pics from my past. You might get a kick out of seeing the very first glide bait I ever made. It was done in the fall of 2004 and looks really, really bad! lol
Enjoy!

Not to shabby for your first. Here is a pic of my first muskie lure that I made in the late nineties sometime while making a bunch of bass poppers. I made it before I had ever even been muskie fishing. Tried to pattern it after a believer, or so I thought. I hadn't ever seen any muskie lures in person, so I tried to make it like the believer that I saw in an in fisherman magazing. Of course, I had no idea that believers were as thick in the head, so mine came out a little funny. The first time I tried it out on my first muskie fishing trip just a few years ago, I found that it doesn't work like a crankbait should, but swims too the side and eventually blows out. So I didn't use it again, just kept it around as my good luck "voodoo" muskie lure for a while and eventually it ended up in one of my unused tackle boxes. Funny thing was, that I pulled it out at the end of December and took it out on the water to see if it would do anything besides swim and what do ya know. Now that I have been muskie fishing a while, I recognize the qualities of a good jerkbait that has a lot of side to side action and good back ups when paused. I think I may throw it a little more. Back to the roots, I guess.

thanks snax, it was inspired by an icthyasaurus, not sure if I spelled that right. One of those big fossilized prehistoric swimming lizards from back when the fishing was REALLY good. Kinda glad I missed those days, though. I wish I had pics of my first bass lure, but unfortunately, it ended up in a tree. Dang it, that lure worked good too. I was madder than heck when that happened.

Yeah, a few years time and quite a product. Heck, it's been improved upon every time you post. I'm glad you get to spend time doing what you love to do. I wish I had the time to make more lures than I do now. But I hope to change that soon.

Congrats on building your own baits Guts. It's an amazing feeling to catch fish on something you've made.

I've been there buddy!
I still do all my planing, routing and some sanding out in the unheated garage which is no fun when it's 20 below zero. Try making up some stencils out of a clear material such as mylar. That way you can mask the parts that you don't want to get overspray onto. It is great for adding dots and bars when you don't have an airbrush to get fine control.

Hi Muskie-Kid,
You might want to start up a new thread asking for crankbait building tips so you will get more responses. Depending on the dimensions of the cranks you have in mind a large diameter dowel might work but I would suggest practicing on a softer wood like pine or cedar while you are creating the right shape. There is a great site specifically about lure building called www.tackleunderground.com . You should get all the answers you are looking for there. Just be sure to come back here to First and show us your progress!

You should start a thread about this bait so we can follow your progress Muskie Kid. Looks good so far.
