Subject: too heavy a trailer???

Can a boat be damaged by too heavy a trailer? Aluminum boat is 310 lbs. and the trailer is rated for 1200 lbs. There are 3 points that will ancjor the boat to it. A local dealer said even 1000 lb rated trailer is too much for that boat. Can anyone help me on this one? Trailer is a Lund and the boat is really flat underneath. Trailer is shaped to carry a deep V hull. Also, is buying a transom saver a waste of money, or can a motor locked down damage a boat? Thanks.
