Posts: 2024 | What's your procedure for sending reels in? For Shimanos, send directly to their corporation HQ in California? Thanks.

Posts: 2024 | Anyone know how much it costs? The form on their website wants me to give them a credit card number, but I don't see where there's a service charge. Thanks.

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I would recomend sending them in also. I have had my reels worked on my two different local guys and they never made it through the season. The cast bar will always hang up before the season ends. Thats with three months of trolling with other rod/reel set ups. I love the reels but they don't get me through the season. They are all going to the address mentioned above. I took Rob M (Shimano rep) out with Jim Gallion(G-Loomis rep), scored them each a muskie this past season after the G-Loomis party at Smokey's Muskie Shop and he told me they had some problems with some of the authorized repair shops. I confirmed my issues with him and he told me it might be the best option to send them dirrect. Thats my plan. I don't know the price but I need them checked out and repaired for my clients for this comming season.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I always call shimano first beofre sending them in.. Doesn't seem necessary, but after having done so several times for corsairs seems better then not calling.. As I recall the address mentioned above is correct..

Posts: 197 Location: N Illinois | I've sent my reels to shimano as well as fixed them myself. NO difference in paying shimano or doing them myself. The thumb bar still sticks a month later. I was very disappointed in the shimano customer care last time I used them.

Posts: 572 | I have a couple of old Shimano Chronarch reels where the thumb bar goes limp and the handle will not pickup the line. I've replaced the clutch dogs and springs, which seems to help correct the problem. If I have any problems this year, I'm going to replace several other parts. The parts are fairly cheap. If that doesn't work, they go to the trash. Basically, I think the main problem is DESIGN. After my experiences, I never want to purchase another reel with a similar design. After all that, I have a tough time throwing them away, as I do like them when they work properly. Outside of my frustrations, I did come across a site showing a procedure for basic reel service, which should be for most Shimano baitcasters. http://home.att.net/~kelley_brown/reelservice.html Hope that might help in maintenance of the reels.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I send my Calcutta TE back each time it goes down(1-2 times a year), and they repair and send it back within days. Their customer service is excellent!!! I send my reels in, and wait for a bill, which usually comes either in the box with the repaired unit, or a separate billing letter. I then call them, and pay over the phone. I wouldn't give my card number till after the repairs are done. That said, I have had some very good luck with some of the local repair guys(Chuck Brod from sportsmans repair in particular), and still go to them for a quick fix(something I can stand and wait for). I just choose to send my Shimanos and Abus(ABU also has extremely good service) in when they go down, as the turn around time from the factory repair centers has been unmatched.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Bob, I had the same problem with the old Chronarch, just after I bought it about 12-13 years ago and sent it in right away. They sent me a different reel as a replacement(Curado). Being that the Chronarch is an older reel that has been out of production for a long time, they might not give you a free replacement, but they might give you a discount on an upgraded new or rebuilt model. It would be worth a try.

| i just got back a Calcutta that i'd sent in to the factory for cleaning/repairs a couple of weeks ago. it cost me $27.00 for repairs (plus maybe $5.00 shipping). this got me a complete new handle assembly, all new gears, and new pawl. basically a new reel except for the frame and the drag system. now THAT is good service. | |||
