planning a trip to Vermillion in early July - wondering what side of the lake is more conducive to mid summer fishing East or West -

also, I know there is a tournament starting July 22 how soon do guys typically start pre-fishing? Should this be a concern or is it big enough not to matter? Thanks -

one last thing, who are the guides to seek out?

Chad cain's guide service is sure to put you on 50+ fish. I went out with him in the middle of summer last year and had a blast. It is a magical time with him out on the open water. I think we boated 5 nice fish that day. If Chad is booked he has other guides (Smilling Mallard) available again this year. Good Luck!!!

I personally prefer the East over the West, more water and less resorts. Both are good. I wouldn't worry about the pre-tourney fisherman, its a big lake and enough spots to go around- especially in early july.

I second the motion on Chad Cain, however being that he is the man, you probably will have a hard time getting a date with him, from what I hear he's pretty well booked up already, but you should not take that from me, check for yourself. If he is busy the dates you like, there are some other good guides. Actually, some of the more local guides know the lake better, just Chad has a knack for putting fish in the boat and is just a fun guy to be around. Musky Tom is a good guy to show you around, he lives on an island on the lake and has been fishing it for years. Good luck

Hawk, you mean you're not going back to that wonderful place that you went to last year?
Just because the motor on the boat that your 70-year old dad was using took a crap and he and your brother had to paddle a mile just to spend a night out on some island is no reason to give up and go somewhere else.
Did you ever get that refund?
Not funny, I know.
Stay some place nice this year.

Beav:

I'm still trying to figure out a way to get you to come along - Cass isn't the only lake up there - (I know, I know, you're still having nightmares about Mobby Dick - however, the new "tailed" perka might be all she needs.

Both ends of Lake Vermilion produce a number of really Big Muskies every year.

The west end gets a lot more of the big resort traffic than the east end does.
The west end is less
of a problem if the winds are blowing hard. The east side has twice the water to fish.

I can also assure you that there are a number of very good muskie guides, that have fished the lake for years. You can find more guide info at; www.lakevermilion.com

If you are undecided, on which side to fish, stay at trancheff's cabins. They are smack dab in the middle at the narrows between the two sides.

July 21-22 put on by Paul Hartman. There is a post on this BB futher down with more details.
As far as resorts in the middle of the lake don't over look Retreat Resort. As far as guides there are several good local ones.

I don't think anyone on the lake put the numbers or size of fish in the boat Chad Cain did this past summer. Sometimes when you have a Michael Jordan type talent...what team you play is not that important...Just as some fisherpeople are just that good no matter what body of water or how long they have been on it... Really worth spending a day in his boat...you get the total package...Ben

Chad is really good out there. He does what it takes to get you on fish.

Luke Ronnestrand is also right in the same category as Chad. I fished the Bob M tourney with him and thanks to Luke we finnished second. He really knows his stuff. The funny thing is though, Chad told us a spot where we caught one of the fish in the tourney. They are both great guys and really know the lake well. Luke can be reached at Thorne Bros.

I spent a day with Chad just watching another team fish, waiting for them to score in the Simply Fishing Classic. Saw another boat get a 50, but our team didn't. It's a really interesting body of water, LOTS of good structure.
