For 4years we've run out hosted chats in the chat room, with great guests, and some really interesting info has come out. Now going into year 5, I'm looking again to set up another (hopefully) stellar lineup for everyone to enjoy. But, I am looking for ways that we can revise the format. In the past, its just a moderated questioning free for all, and there have been some problems with that. Guests cant keep up with the questions, the same questions being asked over and over again, silly comments made....and I'm looking for ways to keep the FUN and INFORMATION there, while trying to reign in the flow of the evening.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I don't know how you'd go about keeping things in line, maybe just ask everyone to hold their questions until your guest has a chance to answer the last one??

Something to chew on...web cams.

Logistically, it could be a source of aggravation but, it would solve a lot of the "problems" experienced in the sessions. The only real issue would come from getting the webcams back and forth between MF and the interviewees in a timely manner.

But, given enough lead time for preparation and any neccessary hook-up training, I think this would be a great idea. The interviewees would simply have to look at their screen, read what questions are typed by the audience and could verbally respond - no typing involved.

Just an idea.

Ask for questions to submit before hand and have the moderator start by asking those questions that most want to hear and then open it up. At least people will be able to follow the madness.

I like Bukes idea. It may take away a little from the spontaneous nature of a "chat" session but would give a basis for the conversation to get going. Maybe just a couple questions started by the moderator and then take off from there.

Yeah, I think maybe if the chat guest was announced a week before and stuck up at the top, people could type in their questions, the chat guest has a week to form answers and just start from there. Then maybe the last 15 minutes of the chat can be open for questions from those in the chat room, to follow up on any of the answers.

The Webcam idea would be cool, but I think too complicating for the people who are not familiar with using them and time-consuming to set up if they don't have them already.

I have rarely participated in the chats, but if a moderator is present, they could act as emcee...so to speak, and designate a person in the room to ask a question. This way, the moderator/emcee has control in the room of how fast the conversation takes place, and can hopefully eliminate a possible issue of one person dominating all the questions. It also allows those in the room to process their own questions as it pertains to the answer given. The moderator also can moderate the questions being asked, so that the same question does not come up over and over...a bit hard...yes....but possible maybe...

It also would not overload the guest speaker since there is only one question at a time.

It's a thought...

One way I have seen it done in the past is a squelch option. The moderator squelches everyone and the speaker goes over a topic or whatever. As they talk no one can ask questions, just read and listen. At some point the moderator can then unsquelch someone to ask a question. The speaker can answer. Then the person who asked the question is squelched and the next person is unsquelched to ask anothe questions. IRC you do this stuff. I believe there are some free programs out there for the web that do this also, but I have not looked in a long time.

I don't think 'asking' people to not speak until they are allowed to ask a question will work. You gave to force on them. Someone always wants to chime in or add thier 2 cents or they come in late and do not realized they should be seen and not heard until it's thier turn. Squelching/muting is the best way and keeps control.

Registered MFirst users only on the chat may cut back a lot of the spammers who visit. Can you build a filter for that?
I'd work from this list for guests if it was me:

If muting or squelching them works...by all means that would make perfect sense... I'd have no problem with that...Its a great idea. Same basic idea, but even more control over the persons attending since they cannot ask questions until allowed.

Good call there... I never knew that type of thing could be done.

Controlling the Q&A to the point of a squelch isn't our goal with the Chats. MuskieFIRST interactive online seminars are intended to be a LIVE Q&A session, fast as the folks attending can ask and our guest can answer. We have had tremendous success with the Muskie Industry, Guide, etc. chats, and moderate them very heavily. We slow the questions when necessary, speed them when they need it, and BOOT anyone who becomes a problem pronto. my suggestion is that as the seminar is underway, everyone respect our guest's dedication of an hour, and chat with buddies or tell jokes later, when our guest signs off. MuskieFIRST has a pretty good atmosphere for self moderation, and I don't care to suddenly have to have 'chat moderators' running the seminars with any more than a guiding influence.
Target rich environment here at the Symposium for Slamr, he made some great Chat contacts here.

I like Bukes Idea also....Would like to see more info on Illinois Musky lakes and Iowa musky lakes. Also how about getting a couple of guys who just fish not a guide or a pro or a tackle shop guy and ask them some questions about what works for them. IE one night get a guy who fish's Minn and one Wis, and One Illinois, and one Iowa ect and see what the regular joe says.

Just my 4 cents,
How about them Cowboys

Sworrall,

How do you control the speed of the questions? Curious more than anything, because based on my experiences (which I admit are few) sitting in and trying to participate in the chat, it seems more like a free for all. When I have been in the chats, I have seen about 7-8 questions go up, one gets answered, then 7-8 more questions...... I cannot follow the chat...It's like the 160 kids I deal with daily having bunches of questions and I need to answer them all, but have only an hour to do so.

Maybe a squelch isn't the best, but...if there is some way one could slow down the pace of questions-vs- answers, it would make it much easier to follow (at least for me...)
