Posts: 341 | We had some luck with this presentation this past weekend. Seemed most hit on the drop. What's your experience on this and what is the recommended weight of jig and plastic to work weed pockets and 12-18 structure effectively. I had 1 3/4 oz but it dropped to quick in my opinion. Posts: 32954 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | That's my specialty. I use 1/2 ounce standup jigs with 6" to 7" tails, and try to match them up to fall at 1 foot per second, the perfect drop speed. If you use 5/8 or 3/4, use a wider spiralling thicker twister type tail to slow the drop speed.

| Do reaper tails and lizards work on the drop? What are some good ways to work reaper tails because i have some but ive had no success throwing them? | |||

Posts: 743 | Steve, are those 1/2 oz jig heads made with a single #5 hook or a #8? and should i assume you dont really use any trailer/singer hooks either? Edited by tomcat 8/16/2005 9:44 AM

Posts: 341 | Steve can you post a pic of one of your set ups. We went 2 for 4 with this and lost a real nice fish. The single hook was sharp and the hook sets where earth shattering not sure why they shook the hooks though.

Posts: 32954 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Sure, here's a few rigged up. The fish don't usually come unpinned easily because of the single hook so no idea either, they sometimes just come off. I use 4 and 5/0 for most of the jigs I make. Plenty of hook, and thin enough to penetrate easily. That's what you want, a wide enough gap and a sharp hook that will drive home easily. Posts: 341 | Thanks this really helps. I like the stand up model do you have any for sale? Do use a weed guard ever? That might have been why we missed two and 8/0 hook.

| Steve - where'd you get that yellow paddle tail? I have looked for larger sizes and different colors of those but haven't had any luck finding them. Guides Choice in Eagel River has a small selection but only like 3 colors and 1 size. | |||

Posts: 32954 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | That design was created by me and Jim Cairnes many years ago. I have a mold here somewhere and made a bunch. That particular one is probably from a fellow on Pewaukee who popped the design and experimented with it for awhile.

Posts: 1438 | Core- If you want to stay with the weedgard, you can thin it out by removing 1 strand of fiber at a time. It'll still be thick enought to shed the weeds but will become a lot more flexible. The jigs I've been having more success with this year are the BooYah's from Gander Mountain. I've been using the 3/8 or 1/2 oz jigs with the weedgard. They have rattles and the rubber skirt. I rig them with the reaper tail sideways, like Steve shows, and with all the bulk they fall nice and slow. In the ballpark of 1 foot per second. Maybe a touch faster. I like the large gap hooks on the BooYah's. Not sure what brand the hooks are but they look like Gamakatsu's. I've stuck 2 ski's this year and numerous LARGE bass while working the edges. Only lost one 'ski unfortunately it was in the 40+ range. Scott

Posts: 585 Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland | Wondering what you fellows are using for leaders? I use Tyger wire and am quite happy with it. The key to avoiding kinks in it at the knot is to pull the knot down very slowwwwwwwly! I'm also looking for a source for Musky-sized hair jigs?

Posts: 32954 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I use 7 strand. I can supply the jigs if you want to tie the hair, otherwise Violent Strike builds several with living rubber skirting.

Posts: 115 | For a leader, I use Tyger tied directly to the jig. I think it gives me a better feel for what the jig is doing. Works for me. I also use the Tyger leader material tied directly when I'm tossing smaller baits like to 1/2 and 1 oz Grim Reaper spinnerbaits, Rattln Shads, and oversize bass jerkbaits. Again, I think it gives me a better feel for what the bait is doing. This year I'm really trying to simplify my tackle and baits. For jigs, I settled on Bait Rigs Esox Cobra jig with either a Mogambo grub or Salt Shaker. The design of the Cobra jig protetcts the hook and is therefore more weedless than a typical jig without a weed gurard. Never did like the fiber weed guards on most bass jigs. Johnny B
