Subject: Musky Trolling?

Hi I'm new to musky trolling and I'm sorry if this is a very noobish question... but how far should my lure be behind the boat? what speed should I be going? and what depth should I be running? I'm on the Upper Niagara River... thanks for any comments or tips

muskyboy is correct, that little book will get you everything you need to know. There isn't a specific 'how far behind the boat' because each lure requires a different amount of line out in each available pound test at a specific speed to reach a desired depth. It would be impossible to answer your question unless you ask about a specific lure.

The walleye Pros have used a trolling book like this one for years, and I'm willing to bet almost every boat on the water during any Pro tournament has a trolling book with them. Here's an example of what the book can do for you.

Joe Bucher's book "Crankbait Secrets" is helpful. Steve Heiting's book "Musky Mastery" has a chapter on how Brian Long does his trolling thing.

I believe a couple of the Mighty Hulbert Brothers are very well trained in trolling big spinnerbaits, just look at the Tom and Steve photo albums for the proof. Those guys are helpful with information and dang but they are fun to party with.

How far behind the boat, depends on how deep you want the bait to go. The farther back, the deeper the bait.

Personally I like to grind bottom at between 2.5 and 3.5 MPH. Some times faster. Some guys troll at speeds from 5 to 7 MPH.

If you can use three poles, run one on the bottom (if no/few weeds), one mid-range depth and one in the prop-wash literally 15 feet behind the boat. Just trust me on that one.

how far behind the boat? How about the lure not even behind the boat. We catch quite a few on a down rod mounted up near the front of the boat with only 5-7 feet of line out and the lure swimming beside the boat, not behind! Works on Lake St Clair. On one of our better days, 10 hooked/8 landed-released, 8 of the hookups came off the down rods with the other two on the boards. Not a single prop wash hit that day.

Sorry, forgot what I was going to say...

Search this board for all kinds of trolling tips and info. There is volumes written on trolling including on this board. A lot of trolling is area specific. Ask successful musky hunters in your area for a few tips.

I have a brand new copy of Mike's trolling book I would be willing to trade for a ERC Triple D in a natural pattern.

I troll all over after these critters and the botom line is similar to casting.......................................................

Almost ANYTHING will work at some time.

Speed, rod placement, length of line, length of leader, lure type & vibration, weights........ throughout the season almost everything works - you need to find out what/when for your body of water.

Trust me, you can catch these things with a rod going straight down off the front of the boat with no line out (just a 4' leader) going 6mph when it's right.

My #1 tip: Keep good notes of what you have tried and if it didn't work try it during different seasons. If it did work note the time frame/deatais and do it next year under similar conditions. The first fish is the toughest one.....
Good luck,
Jeff
