Posts: 180 Location: Kinkaid Lake, IL | I own the Big Bird planers and I am not pleased with it. I am looking for a light weight plastic trolling planner that runs great all the time. I have seen alot of different ones on the market, but do not have the time or money to try them all out. We are about to get on a hot bite down on Kinkaid and I want to be ready for the next biggin. Any suggestions????

Posts: 107 Location: milwaukee | If you are going to try Offshore planers, I'd try the orange OR-31 model. I have the smaller(?) yellow OR-12 models and they don't run very well with even smaller sized muskie lures. Can't get more than about 2-ft out with a 1 oz spinnerbait - might as well not even use them. I think the OR-31s are larger and would probably give more spread and track better. I'd suggest getting the OR-18 releases, too. Don't know much about the Church models, but looks like they have a larger one that would do the trick.

If you're going to use trolling boards, you might want to think about purchasing a mast system. It is by far one of the best investments I've made in a long time. These boards allow you to troll multiple lines with big baits. I'm able to troll believers, depthraiders, and jakes with no problems. You want to use OR-19 clips while using this system. I know a mast system is more costly, but it will pay for itself in the first season. Good luck-Todd K.

Posts: 459 Location: New Baden IL | Scott, I use the Gary Roach Mr. Walleye boards when I put baits out wide. The releases hold the superline so much better than any other type I've tried. Next time you see me out on the water, stop by and I'll let you have a go with them. Rod

Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | I use the mr walleye boards too. I have found them to be the best. If you use the offshore, get the clips with the pin, they hold anything. If the mr walleye board dives, it is because it stahled. Put the weight all they way back. If it dives when retrieving back, don't pump the rod and reel. That stahls the board too.

Posts: 103 Location: Land O' Lakes WI | I am like ToddM. Used the Offshores (Regular and the Salmon/Striper version) with the upgrade to the pin style adjustable release. In 4 footers on Green Bay this weekend we had no problem pulling 13" Grandma's or Big Ernies at 4 MPH+ into or quartering the waves. Most boards are only as good as the release. like many deer rifles are no better than the optics you choose. Good Luck, Mark

I was wrong, it's the same size as the OR-12. Only difference seems to be the color and release. Mark Gostisha, can you provide any info on how you use these boards with the big lures? I can't get a decent spread with 1 oz spinnerbaits and smaller cranks at 3 mph. The boards go tail down, taking the angled nose out of the water. Got to also look at the Mr. Walleye board. If I can't get the Offshore's to work any better I think I'll try those. The adjustable weight would help keep the nose in the water with bigger lures.

Location: Des Moines IA | I use the Off Shore 12's. With DR's ,I run 1 oz weights on the front of the leaders, I have a little tail sag on the boards but they still do their job of pulling away from the boat. Don't think I will be able to run anything bigger than DR's or maybe 10 in Jakes, even with the adjustable clips. I usually run the big baits with a 3 oz weight, shortlined (10-30ft) behind the boat anyway.

Posts: 103 Location: Land O' Lakes WI | The upgrade release is slightly longer than the OEM release. When the replacement is made I point the longer release more forward rather than perpendivular to the board. Helps a little on the nose up/tail down attitude of the board. I learn to live with the attitude of the board and let out sufficient line to make a spread. I generally only run two boards on each side of the boat so I do not need the hundred yard wide spread that the walleye guys seem to enjoy on boards. Generally there is 20 yards or less between outside boards. The shorter spread allows better control if trying to keep lures on a weedline or breakline. One buddy puts the small screw eyes on the Offshore striper version on the bottom edge of the front of the board and hangs weight from the board, but I have no tried this. Mark

Posts: 180 Location: Kinkaid Lake, IL | Thanks for the help guys. Rodney- I would love to try them out before I shell out $60 for the pair. The Walleye boards by Gary Roach look like they will be the best option for me. The trolling bite is on at Kinkaid and I need to spread my baits out for more action. In the last week we have boated the bigger fish trolling rather than casting, but I am sure that will change soon.

Posts: 550 Location: So. Illinois | All, When you reference the Gary Roach Mr. Walleye Planner boards, are these the ones sold by Church tackle? I did a search on Gary Roach Planer Boards and came up empty. Jerry
