Thought I might try slowwww trolling suckers this year on planer boards but with so many types to choose from I thought i might get some feed back on which ones are good for this technique.

Thoughts?

The Offshore boards work great, as do the Gary Roach boards. Either will require some work on the clips to avoid the board coming loose, but both would work great. A spinner blade in front of the sucker will help stabilize it and keep it from spining. How would you rig it for quick strike capacity?

I've seen this technique litlerally hammer the walleyes using, of course, smaller baits and rigs. it should work very well for muskies, too.

Didn't Herbie write an article about using boards with Suckers in the Musky Hunter mag a while back?
If Herbie wrote it, it's worth reading, and re-reading. That guy is a muskie whiz!

I have tried it before. The hard part is getting a hookset. The board puts your rod tip at a different angle than the sucker and you cannot get a straight line to it unless you get over top of the fish. Tried it could not get a hookset.

The trick is to have the boards stacked close and use only two per side, so when the fish hits the board swings immediately behind the boat. I'd say 15' for the boat's about perfect. From the back deck a hookset works OK. To get the sucker down, attach a snap weight.

If you have the boards 45 to 60 feet away, then the trick is to simply grab the rod and start reeling slowly putting some pressure on the fish. Since this technique doesn't rely on the sucker swimming around, a smallish stinger treble placed on the rig so the position is bottom center like a crankbait will help you pin up. I've used this for big pike in Canada a couple times and it worked pretty well. Can't troll here, so I don't get to try it in N Wis.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually went back into my Musky Hunter archieve and found the article by Steve Herbeck. It is in the October/November issue and is called "Plain(er) Sense with Live Bait. Good article! Really would like to know if Herbie has modified or improved this technique over the last couple of years.
