Subject: Another Manta Question......

I have been working Manta's just below the surface. In the last 2 weeks I have had several fish "blow up" on the bait and completely miss it

I know for sure a couple of them were "ski's" the other may have been a large Bass (never saw the fish only lots of splash)

Is anyone else experiencing this or lazy follows? Any ideas on what to do??

Looking for a little help, I need to get rid of the bad mojo.... [:((]

Thanks,

Mark

I have had this happen too. Last week on LOTW I have a fish hit the lure 3 times on the same retrieve (she really wanted it)....big explosions in the water, but no hook up. Once I felt the weight of the fish, but still on the hook set, there was nothing on the other end.[:(]

I don''t know what in the heck is going on, but I''m still using them, I''ve seen more fish following/eating these things than anything else this year.

Yeah, because the Manta glides so far and wide there are a lot of misses. I personally like to work them slower, deeper, and with a bit of a pause b/w wide swings. This is the Manta's best feature, the one that sets it apart from others, so I try to feature it. This might mean more misses. When I first picked up the lure this spring I was working it more like other gliders, faster hops. I was hooking everything that came near it! The swath it cut through the water was narrower and fish were able to hit it better, I believe. But I still like the wide swings, and a fish that 'airballs' a lure is one that you will probably see again- and thats cool to me. I also don't seem to get too many lazy follows using the wide swing, erratic cadence retrieve. A huge Manta glide to the side in the middle of smaller more rhythmic ones is the best trigger I have seen on any lure yet! Good luck

Thanks for the help guys...

I gotta tell ya I love this bait, I am now keeping one of these rigged as a pitch-back if I'm not fishing it.

Over the weekend I have found several things that helped.

1. A little more eratic cadence with a couple of wide glides thrown in got a 33" for me on Friday afternoon and better fish hit later the same day next to the boat.....I missed it.....:(

2. A shorter (5" max) leader with a split-ring helps prevent the lures "Wide Glides" from fowling back on itself.

3. Even a fairly inexperienced client can work this bait well within a few short minutes of practice.

Thanks again for the info,

Let'em go.... all of them.

I''m curious if people are moving the amount of fish they EXPECTED to with this lure. Don''t get me wrong, the bait has the sweetest glide on the market... but is it lacking some belly roll, up and down movement, or ability to hang motionless without hanging up on the leader.... all things I feel are needed to trigger strikes? Any tricks to add those manuevers to the lure? Just askin'' since I''ve only caught one pike on the darn thing so far.

Those of you that have been popping fish with this bait... are you fishing it fast or slow? Seems strange that my Reef Hawgs and Jerkos continue to catch fish and the Manta is striking out. Am I doing something wrong????

I like the glide on a manta but i haven't even had a follow on the thing. I used one for a couple hours one day and didn't see anything and switched to a viper and immediatly had action. I thought this bait was going to be one really worth the hype, to me it is just another glider that will be second string to vipers phantoms and reef hawgs.

I have caught a couple of fish on the manta, lost a couple, and had many follows. I really like the glide, and the way it "hangs" on the corners. I work it slow during cold fronts, and faster when the weather dictates. I cannot get the lure to foul on my leader no matter how I work it, so I have no advice for the guys that are having this problem. The only time it fouls is rarely when it hits the water on a cast. I am using a 10" 135# single strand leader, 50# TUFF, 6500 C3, and a 6'10" heavy action Rizzo rod. This lure has moved more fish for me than any other this year. Sort of reminds me of an underwater jackpot. I like to vary the retrieve with fast/slow and hard/soft twitches with a couple of good pauses. I think the manta has a pretty good belly roll. Especially if after a pause you give it a pretty good twitch. Seems to be the best way to get the belly flash. The Lac Suel perch has been my favorite color. I like my reef hawgs, but the action is totally different from the manta. None of my hawgs glide like the manta. They are much more erratic with more up/down and roll. I guess it depends on the mood of the fish.

Just some random thoughts. [:)]

Are these baits still too hard to come by and not everyone has one yet? I know most bait shops can''t keep ''em in stock they sell so fast. Surprised by the lack of replies to this discussion. Does that mean this bait is NOT producing or are you guys trying to keep it quiet[;)]? Personally, my results have been VERY disappointing and I''m looking for some feedback to help improve my success. It just bugs me that "I" think the bait looks so yummy in the water, yet the fish don''t don''t even want to take a look at it... let alone eat the darn thing. I typically do better with glide baits in the fall... so we''ll see what happens then.....

The Manta has been producing for me when I fish it fast. I fish it almost as fast as a Jackpot. I give it about 2 twitches every second....I know that's fast, but it works. About half of my casts, I'll stop the lure for about 2 seconds, give it a quick snap to get it to glide, then give it another snap and let it swing all the way out and wait for the damn 'ski to hit it!!! I've seen so many damn fish on this lure, it's sick and I've missed a bunch, but I think the fish are missing it too. I fish it really fast and I use it as a "search" bait a lot of the time....like a bucktail. I get in just as many casts as my brother does if he's throwing a bucktail or crank bait.

Hope this helps. Speed Kills.

I too am a little shocked the my partners and I aren't moving the fish like i think I should. Jason, I know you were saying a while back that your mantas ran deep. I don't know if they are running deep at the end of the cast and they come to the surface by the boat or what, but it seems that I have to work mine SLOW to get it to run three feet. Am I just stupid or is this how everyone else is working their bait, near the surface that is?

To the guys having success, are you getting any results over open water with these?

Maybe some experimenting with your retrieves a bit will help improve some of the guys' opinions who aren't sold on it yet. I personally have found the slow, wide glide followed by a few random, quick hops triggers just about everything. And those it doesn't usually go for the long, delayed hang I follow the hops with. A little tight line is the key for preventing hookups on the leader at that stage. Just stick with them - it's been one of the top two lures this year for me (maybe I'll mention the other one, which is an AWESOME modification, if somebody initiates a thread on the lure or mod's in general.) Oh yeah, and changing one or both of the hooks greatly affects the working depth of the manta - that way you don't have to wait all day for it to drop if you want to work it deep.
