Hi :

I just got a Herbie rig and am planning on some sucker fishing next week (about 14-16" long suckers). I've not done it before by myself (only at a Fall University of Esox school, a few years ago...). I don't have any problems with how to put the rig on through the nose/rubberbands, etc, but was surprised to see that it only comes with one treble. Should it have two or will one suffice? I also have some Bucher Quik and Smitty quick strike rigs with the hook that goes through the suckers upper lip with two additional trebles. Which do you guys with experience with this technique prefer and why? Also do most use the float to suspend or just keep the clicker on and watch while casting other baits. I will be fishing from a boat. Thanks alot for any advice

I don't fish suckers alot, but do know that the Herbie Rig has a great reputation out there. Anyone??

1 hook will get the job done for smaller suckers. 2 are better for really big suckers. I make my own safety pin/hook system and crimp various lengths of 90# wire. I can use two hooks on the larger suckers, one short up front and one slightly longer for the back. Nice when you have a wide assortment of leads. You can pick the right length for the job even on small-medium size bait.

Floats work great in shallow water. Especially when snags are abundant. Try picking up a bag of party balloons. You can blow them up to the size of the sucker and they adjust easily on the line. Long lining can be very effective in deeper water. In some situations floats can be used in deeper water if you are targeting baitfish at a certain depth. Mix a float in with a couple long lines and you can space your spread out and target various depths.
