I am wondering if anyone knows if it is still the law that you must have a spinner blade on a live bait sucker rig in Minnesota?

I believe that if you're going to use more than 1 hook you need to place a spinner blade between the hooks. That's what we do when we go to Zipple Bay for Northerns in spring. I don't think you need a spinner if you're using a single hook.

If true..... What is the point of that law?

I’m looking for clarification as well as I will be traveling to MN soon.

Once attaching a spinner blade it is then considered an “artificial lure”.

Not sure on the specifics for quick strike sucker rigs. Additional insight would be much appreciated!

Not exactly sure on this one but I think the spinnerblade allows for the use of a treble hook. In effect turning the sucker rig into a 'tipped' artificial lure. I believe trebles are currently only allowed on lures in Mn, not on bait rigs.
Hopefully someone that knows for sure will post.

From the MN DNR 2005 fishing regs:

"Anglers may only use one hook. An artificial lure is considered one hook. A treble hook, when not part of an artificial lure, is considered three hooks and is not legal. The exception is three artificial flies may be used when angling for trout, crappie, sunfish, and rock bass."

Has anybody ever been cited for using a quick set rig?

This needs to be changed, you can legally use a kill-rig(single hook) but you cannot use the nonkill rig(quick set).

Thanks slayer! Does this promote single hook kill rigs? I have some experience using circle hooks. I will explore that option.

Last winter on LOTW I was confident we were within the law adding spinner blades to our pike leaders (with trebles). Based on the regulation quoted I may be wrong.

What is the best method for rigging suckers in MN?

I dont sucker fish but I sometimes 'slum' with them in the fall when they are fishing from shore,,yes you must have a spinnerbalde above your quickstrike rig but you can use quickstrikes with this modification,,alot of people buy some plastic beads to put above and below the blade,,,this is a law put in place years ago has a result in part of some people using trebbles to snag fish in rivers so they felt with a spinner blade above the hooks it would be less hard to snag them,,its a stupid law and The MMA is trying to get it changed maybe has early has 06,,,now get this!!! It used to be unlawfull to use suckers longer then 16 inches,,if you were caught with live suckers longer then 16 inches in your boat or vehicle you were considered to be "transporting rough fish" I dont know if they enforce this anymore with the surge in Musky fishing popularity here now,,,for better desc of how to rig a quickstrike for Minnesota call Thorne bros they get this ? all the time

I answered my own question by contacting the MN DNR.

Quick strike rigs are legal as long as you attach a spinner blade classifying it as an artificial lure. The 1st treble has to be within 3” of the spinner blade. You can add an additional treble no more then 3” beyond the 1st.

I will be crimping 3” & 6” leads on my quick strike hooks. Using one hook for smaller suckers and two for the big ones. No different then what I do now just a more specific guideline. Adding a spinner to the wire lead will not be a problem.

Sure beats the alternative.

We're heading to Mille Lacs this weekend and were hoping to drag some 16 - 18 inch sausages most of the weekend. Unfortunately, it appears the max length on a sucker in MN is now 12 inches. On Page 8 of the MN regs it has a 'new' definition of Minnows. It indicates a sucker (as well as members of the mud minnow family) can't exceed 12 inches. I called the DNR guy at 888-646-6367 and his first response was there was no length limitation on the size of sucker minnows. When I asked him about the reg on page 8, he asked me to hold. He came back and changed his answer to a 12 inch max. Since I tend to be a magnet for the DNR, I don't think we will be using anything over 12 inches. We just made up quick strike rigs that include spinners and some that don't. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has been checked or ticketed for using minnows larger than 12 inches. My guess is it would be difficult to even buy them bigger than 12 inches if it is illegal in MN.

You can only use 1 line for anything,,except icefishing where you can use two,,except on designated trout lakes where you can only use 1 ,,the law makers keep REAL busy here

This has to be the most $#&"'d up bunch of regulations in the book. Who can really make sense of them all! Me I'm just a dumb musky fisherman who will fish with suckers when given a chance, and add a tiny spinner blade when I have to. Hey, I wonder if if tail gunners count?

The thing about the 12" suckers is bs. Every bait shop in the metro sells suckers bigger than 12".
