Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | We just got in the new C3's fellas...I don't know what they did internally, but they don't feel as solid and they look cheap, kinda like the D series. But of course the prices went up $10.00. A 5500 is $70.00 and the 6500 is $80.00. I got a 5500 and will be tossing baits around this weekend. If anybody has any reports, please add.

Posts: 1270 | I used the new C3's and C4's back in July on a trip to Canada. To me they felt a lot smoother than previous models. They really seemed to be "tight" feeling. The drags were also able to be locked down tight, something that previous Abu's did not always do. As for them looking "cheaper" I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer the look without all the stickers on them. The stickers would often come off after a years use anyway. The new reels also have a six pin centrifigal brake system that is easier to use and more flexible than the earlier 2 post system. And try as hard as I could I could not either bend the handles or get the handle "paddles" to pull off.

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | I heard rumor, and you know how rumors are, that the whole line is being re-done, AGAIN, and that the new stuff is going to have a plastic-type composite body/frame... Any truth to that..?

Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | I am glad that you just saw them, because many of my accounts have seen them for the last month and absolutely love them. A clean look without any stickers, as jigstop mentioned. The 6 pin centrifugal brake system is dynamite. The larger, tighter padded handles are GREAT. The star drag is oversized and easy to tighten and loosen. They cast like a dream and never missed a beat in use. Drag systems are extremely smooth with a carbon matrix drag system in it. The worm gear is now chemical nickel coated which makes it smoother and more durable. The worm gear and pawl were not the weak spots in the older models anyway. It was the lack of keeping them clean that would do in the worm gears and pawls. If you disagree, post and let me edumacate you in reel care 101. The C3's, C4's and the new Record's are fantastic. Anglers will love the smoothness and durability of these reels. Step-a-side manufacturers and let the big boy through. Oh yes, I was just in an account on Tuesday of this week. A gentleman had the top model of another brand of reel, that will go unnamed (hint:the top model ends in 2 letters), and he saw the new Record reel. He told the manager of the store to order him one of the Records up to replace his "other" reel because the Record was so smooth and solid feeling and less than half the price. I am writing orders for people on reels through dealers that have seen them at the dealers when I am meeting with them. People are loving the reels and are anxious to get their hands on them. Good fishing and enjoy the new reels, Chuck

Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | Mark, I would love to hear where these rumors are coming from. I can only imagine where and who would be saying that. There is absolutely NO truth to those rumors. NO plastic or composite frames. The only fiber parts in the reel are, let me think here, the cog wheel on the palming side, the spool pinion and the centrifugal brake blocks. That should be about it. This is no more, and even less, than reels that are 2 times as much or more. There is a popular reel on the market that many people talk about that has a PLASTIC main plate. I have snapped one of these in-half with my hands. The main plates of the Abu's are metal. Hope this clears some of the "RUMORS" that are starting. Chuck

Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | Jeffo, Not sure who, in your immediate area has them, but you could try Thorne Brothers or Joe's in the Cities area. Reeds in Walker or Reeds in Brainerd are 2 more places. You can also give Rollie and Helen's a call as they should have them in as well. If you get to the Madison, WI area, ALL 3 Dorn's will carry the line of Records. If you get to the Hayward, WI area, Hayward Bait & Tackle should have them in stock. If you get to the Rhinelander, WI area, Nelson's Choice should have theirs in stock now as well. Hope this helps, Chuck

Posts: 714 Location: Rhinelander, WI | After my Calcrapa failed on me for the second time in three years. This time during a tourney costing me about 15 minutes of time and 50 yards of power pro line. I made the decision that I will buy nothing but Abu products. They may not be the smoothes and they do break every once and a while. All musky reels will eventually succumb to the abuse we put them under. But Abu’s are usually easily fixed, with parts readily available, usually you can even do it yourself. As Oneida said this weekend during the Hodag Abu reels are like that old rusty truck that just keeps running. They may need a little oil every once and a while, but they keep going and going. What good is a Ferrari if it’s in the garage half the time or leaves you stranded? I will limp through the rest of this year with my trusty 55 and 65 C3s, try to get the Calcrapa working again. But this winter I will probably get a couple of the new Abu’s. The Record looks like a nice real for the money. With all the benefits of Abu’s customer relations. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewabugarciarecord.html Nail A Pig! Mike

Posts: 1270 | How the heck do you burn out 2 reels in 3 days? We had 12 guys using the new C3's and C4's hard for 4 days without one malfunction. That's 48 total man days without a problem. You can't get 1-1/2 days with yours?!?! What were the problems and what do you do to your reels to break them? I always find it interesting that 99%+ of the fishermen out there have no problems with a piece of equipement and that 1/2% have a problem all the time. Mike, I do not know you but if you are going through reels this fast do you think it might be time to take a look at what you are doing that 99% of the other fisherman are not doing?

| I have never seen a guy who burns through more reels than the Hulbert. Everybody's cooked an abu if the spend enough time on the water...what are you doing to these poor things? Didn't you cook some shimano or something, too? Is it the Weagle? Are you using these poor reels to bring in your anchor? And what are you doing to Abus that you aren't doing to the Ticas you promote--went 0 for 3 on the Tica and went back to the rusty pickup.... | |||

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | Cory, here's more info on the Record. I didn't see anything about a lefty, but I didn't read the entire review. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewabugarciarecord.html

Posts: 1270 | The Records will be available in both right and left handed versions. There will also be both a wiffle spool and high capacity spool version of the 6 size Records. The HC model will also have a power handle on it. The word I heard is that the HC and leftys will not be available till November or December though.

Posts: 1270 | The wiffle spool has a large arbor with holes drilled in it to make it lighter weight. Being that it has the larger arbor the line capacity is also reduced. The reasoning for the wiffle spool is generally to get the spool to weigh less allowing for better casting distance. When we are talking about musky fishing and using 3oz.+ baits I really don't think that is neccessary. Even though the line capacity is reduced there is still plenty of room for line with everybody using super lines now. If, for example, you used your reels for trolling for salmon then I would definatly go with the HC model. If you are only using it for musky fishing I would get the one you want based on your handle preference. HC=power handle Wiffle=standard double handle

Posts: 23 | Will we be able to buy a power handle to replace the standard double handle on the wifflle-spool model? If so, is it the same as current power handles?

Posts: 1270 | The handles should interchange without a problem. I wouldn't be surprised if the HC has a power handle that matches the color of the new reel though.

Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | Mr. Roberts, If you want to see the new Records, check with either Rollies or Kristy. I know that Kristy has only 1 left. The new 6500C3's are also in-stock at both of these places. Both places will be getting in the High Capacity models and the lefties. Chuck

| Got a chance to do some casting with the newly redesigned 7000 this last weekend at the Cass Lake tournament. The guys that are using 7000's are going to do back flips over this reel. Instant anti-reverse, light weight, instant engagement when the handle is engaged - WOW is it nice! | |||

| OK, I am confused (easy to do). Last week I Left me brand new 7000 big game, and 6501 C3 and rods at the dock and they walked off. So I need to replace me new reel. These Leaders sound awesome...but I am a lefty. So. Is the 7000 going to be in a left handed model?? Can I get one now?? How is the new one different form the big game?? I want to replace the C3 with a leader, but it sounds like the lefties for this won't be avail for a while.... Cory | |||

| I understand that the 7000's will not be available until next year. The one that I used was a one and only model out for testing by Lance Christensen from Pure Fishing. I have no idea about the lefty models, but you would think that both the left and right hand models would be out together. This reel was much lighter than the Big Game. | |||

Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | The Record will be available in left hand; RCN61. The Big Game 7000 is available in left hand; BG7001HS. The 6500C3's are still available in left hand; 6501C3. These have been all re-done. The 6600C4 (now a thumb bar and not a push button on the 6 size C4) is available in left hand; 6601C4. The Trophy (5.3:1 gear ratio with 4 ball bearings) is available in left hand; 6501TC. The 6600SSC3 (5.3:1 gear ratio, 3 ball bearings, dealer direct/no chains) is available in left hand; 6601SSC3. I know for a fact that Rollie and Helens WILL be carrying ALL of these reels. The only ones that would not be available yet are the Record RCN61's. They will be coming though in that Novemberish/Decemberish time frame. I hope this helps with what lefties are available through Abu for the musky guys. Also look for the 5 size reels in these different models in lefties if you like a smaller reel. Chuck

| I do hope they do a 7001 with instant AR, it would be a near perfect reel! Bet they don't though... | |||
