Posts: 743 | the never ending reel debate...i'm not looking for bashing here. I know the Calcutta TE is sweet, good, reliable reel. I know alot of guys have had problems w/ Calcutta's, so i'm wondering which calcutta's people have been blowing up? (ct, S??) is it the Calcutta's CT that is about $200 for a 400 series? or is not even the calcutta people have problems w/? is it the Coirsair or another low end Shimano reel. YES, i know that all reel will have problems when you use them, i'm just looking for somethign to hold up better than my Abu's are. thanks tomcat Edited by tomcat 1/13/2004 11:28 AM

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I have two Corsair 400's, no problems with either, 1 is silver, the other gold. The silver ones were recalled by shimano, not all silver ones were affected but shimano will exchange a silver one for a gold one no questions asked. My brother hates his corasir. My Calcutta 400, just the regular calcutta, has broke down twice. Once on a cast. When taken apart by shimano they wanted to know what I hooked into as it must have been big...nope, broke on a cast. The other time something got into the worm gear, so wasn't the reel. My Garcia's have broke down only once. Was able to back reel with it... Returned it for a new one and have been trouble free for about 8 years now. Would I buy another Shimano, another Calcutta maybe, but the Penn 965 for about the same price looks pretty good. Would I buy a TE, NO. Too expensive. I can buy a 965 or a regular 400 with a St Croix premier for the same price as the TE.

Posts: 150 | I hear the TE is only to be used for Gar fishing and should not be used for Musky. I should know, I AM THE GAR EXPERT!! R

Posts: 172 Location: Chagrin Falls, Ohio | Hey Tomcat, The Calcutta is not bulletproof, but close to it. I carry about 15 in my boat most of the time and had one fail on me a few years ago. When the water isn't hard I fish at least 5 days a week, so they see alot of abuse. My current crop of Calcutta's are about 5 years old, and have been great, I am sold on them. No-nonsense design that works. I did buy a new TE 300 this year for throwing lighter bucktails and Traps. It is definitely a step up if you can afford it. It's great for throwing lighter baits but not really necessary for the heavier tackle.

Posts: 743 | Thanks Tyler, 0723, Kev, Gar Man...i'm going w/ the 700 TE. The 700TE doesn't have a push putton, but it's not a long lever either, it has a switch on it. So, i'm go give it a try. This past season i got to use my buddies 400TE Conquest and the regular 700's too...loved the 700's, but the TE upgrade seems so worth it. i only wish they made a 700 TE Conquest. that would be sweet tits. thanks for the info guys, i do appreciate it. tomcat

| I fish muskies at least 100 days a year and i also fish tournaments (pmtt) as you can imagine being a tournament fisherman i expect flawless performance from my tackle and i do get just that from my calcutta ct400s. All i have ever done to my reels is clean and lubricate them. ( I THANK ALL THE PEOPLE AT SHIMANO FOR PUTTING OUT SUCH A FINE CASTING REEL.) | |||

Posts: 96 Location: Eden Prairie, Mn. | T-Cat The Calcutta - dollar for Dollar - is the standard all reels measure against. Sure, some will have a problem, the law of averages will catch up to you. Year in and year out the reel just works and at a level of refinement that was hardly matched until the new Diawa and the highest end ABU. Time is the great equalizer, we'll see if those models will sustain their performance at the Calcuttas level. Bad Shimano - the CORSAIR, virtually disposable 1 - 2 years and send it back and shimano replaces it with a brand new reel. Not a bad gig. I have rotated in 4 corsairs over the past 7 years. Location: Illinois-Indiana | I have the 400's and they work great, it's like anything else if you don't take care of them, they will not last. Like it was said, take them apart and clean and lube them and they will last you a long long time.

| I also must sing the praises of the 400's have a couple and aside from cleaning out the gunk and oiling them up the can take a pounding! Someday there will be an indestructable powerhouse of a reel but until that happens,I haven't found another reel that will take the punishment. | |||

Posts: 2089 | Another vote for the Calcutta 400's.With regular cleaning and such, they'll last a lifetime.I must admit the 400TE I've been using daily(Several hours a day)for 3 weeks using heavy baits in a very spastic retrieve and that thing has been flawless.Love the larger paddle handles too.Irionically, from working these baits and setting the hook on big fish, I found the handle was bent when I backed off the drag at the end of the day.Bent it back and called Shimano for a spare.25 bucks.Takes some serious "workin" to bend the handle .I asked the rep if the handle from a TE would work on a CT and he said no.Crap.I would have replaced them all.Muskies in the Corn state are mean!(but love big fat topwaters!!) Big fishes to all this season! Steve One More Cast.....

Posts: 670 Location: Minnetonka , MN. | I have both the Calcutta and Calcutta TE. I would not get the TE again I would get 2 Calcuttas in its place. Don't get me wrong I like the TE but not the price.

Posts: 743 | Tyler, JT, Mother, Fever, Teck and fellow Indiana Gar fisherman...thanks for info...but i guess the decision was out of my hands...wife stepped up to the plate and delivered the Calcutta 700 TE for my birthday. I can't believe i got something i actually wanted. I"m stoked!! Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone. I guess i just wish they made a 700 TE Conquest.... Got a new custom rod on order for the TE. I'm planning on casting this 700 TE. I spoke to several guys who also cast them. the lever on there isnt a big "trolling" lever, it's really more like a switch. wife gets me a te, still can't believe it. Teck, get back to doing whatever you are doing...planning your next musky adventure, i'm sure. tomcat

Posts: 7 | Calcutta's are great, I haven't ever had a problem with mine. If you fish all day they are the reels for you because they are very easy to reel and smooth. Nolan
