Subject: Eagle Lake Pigs....

Hey Muskie1ster's,

I'm hear to give you a report on Eagle over Labor Day.

Weston, Kevin Wegner, and I descended on Eagle's Vermilion Bay on Friday afternoon. We traveled around Vermilion Bay, and found two excited fish....both ate in a figure eight....42" (Weston) and a 45" (Kevin). They were awesome fish, and it seemed like a successful evening.

The next day found us down east....saw 5, and no takers, so we returned to the West Arm around 5:15 p.m. WOW...what a night! We saw 9 fish....all BIG, and the smallest one ate...it was 45" in a figure eight, on a topwater...Weston sure can keep his cool at boatside! So, day two, and we were into three muskies, but none of the calibre we were looking for. This is truly THE time to hang a hawg!

Sunday came and went with 12 fish seen down West, and a couple of very, very HEAVY fish, but no takers. Then we went to the Bay and saw 2, and Weston caught a 44"er. They shut right off at 11:45 a.m., and we never saw another fish!

Then the fateful day of Monday came. By 11:00 a.m. we'd seen 6 fish....not one under 48"....and they were all FAT! All of the sudden, out of nowhere, a HUGE muskie, 56-58" ate Kevin's bait out about 20 feet from the boat. She was bulldawging at us, trying to shake the bait. She had a hump behind her ears that went 2 inches tall. It was one of the most impressive displays I've ever seen. Unbelievable in fact! Kevin did everything right, but she shook off at the boat. It would have been a 50 pound class fish, and as I type this, my heart still aches for Kevin....WOW, what a loss! That night, I later caught the smallest fish again, at 45". Kevin would have to head home for a meeting while Weston and I fished Tuesday.

On Tuesday, we were joined in our boat by Clint. A super nice guy....cool to have in the boat, and whose never caught a muskie before. You know what's coming right? Well after spending the day down west, and seeing 18 fish...all big and all hot, we decided to go out after supper. The very first spot we went to, I had a near 50"er eat at the boat in the figure eight....WAYYY COOLLLL! Then, the very next spot, Clint had a 48"er eat right at the boat too. Weston netted both fish like he'd been doing it for 10 years...oh ya, he has been, I'm almost forgot! It was quite an exciting night, and Clint is now addicted!!!

After all was said and done, I am still aching over Kevin's loss. I'm sure he is too!!! By the way....7 fish caught, 6 on figure eights!! As well, 4 of 7 came off of secondary sctructure!!

Hope you enjoy the read and the pic.

Donnie

Dude that's a nice fat fish. What was the length of that pig? Would have love to see pic of the 50 lb class fish that was lost.

The length was UNDER 50" by an 1/8 of an inch. It is amazing how you always round up fish that are 48.875" long to 49".....but you NEVER round up a 49.875"er....it was just under 50"s. Weston thought it was my 20th 50"er for my career, because when it hit, it had such a big mouth with it's gills flared.....WOW that was awesome!

BUT, no matter how awesome, the HAWG we lost was a heart-breaking, career-making muskie!

That would probably be the only 49.875" fish ever caught. A very honest fisherman. Great fish!!!
Great job Donnie!!!

Is that your biggest non 50 or have you caught a 49.99999"?

Bytor,

I caught a fish that looked over 50".....pinched tail measured 49.997697863907"...no go, and having set my BIG fish benchmark at 50", I made sure it went 50...funny though, it was caught off the same spot, September 1, 1991....weird huh?

outstanding Donnie .... it was a fun week especially seeing Clunt do so well and now having a reef named after him, and of course meeting your group and learning the history of the Eagle Lake adventures. i look forward to seeing you again before next year and continue the great debates of this awesome sport. it was my first trip to Andy Meyers Lodge after 7 years at LOTW .... no dings on LOTW, but i'm heading back to Eagle from here on out. Herbie, Cal, Mike and the entire crew up there are outstanding!!!

Sled....Eagle is not an easy nut....it has brought me to tears many times....but I have been rewarded well from the tough SOB....so I love going back!!! Plus the company at Herbies is top shelf!

i was crying 3 out of 4 days. consolation prizes ate for me sliding in on spots that had big fish on them just hours before ... twice! ... one 50'ish missed for me. a full day on the water with nuts waves (40+ mph winds) all friggin day with everything that could go wrong going wrong. went out later that night and John got his 50'. fishing grandmas hard (i am now a believer ... granmas, raiders and bulldawgs ... oh, my) nonstop and having to dodge the friggin bruise that now makes up my entire rib cage really had me whining and add to that quitting smoking by dipping a can of copenhagen that burned a hole in my lip by the end of the trip ... successful to help quitting though

Eagle is all it's cracked up to be ... not numbers water, but a shot at a big fish .... but that's my interest and wow does it ever hold true.

in the 4 days we were there ... there were 4 totally different weather situations with a major storm on the night before the big wind day .... i think there were only 11 guys in camp and there were 8 fish caught over 47" i think ... with a few big fish missed and many more coming out to give us a shot to play. man, you can't ask for any more than that. that lake has alot of variety too which is really intriguing ... we spent most of our time south and down east while Donnie and his group i think worked the west arm over most of the time .... awesome water.

Hey Donnie,
It's been a while...busy as all get out. Sounds like another great trip. Talked with Herbie the other night and he told me about the heartbreaker(s) recently up there. I took a quick run up there in late July for about four days and took this piggie...last hour of the trip, 4 hours earlier I popped a chunk of a 45" on the same spot, same bait...nice last day!

Leaving in the early AM tomorrow to hook up with Rob and Danny, then off to New Mexico elk hunting with the bow...we'll be picking Herbie up at the airport Thursday, then up the mountains...yeah baby!!
