Good Afternoon,

This season have been fishing with a screaming 5500 C3...maybe this is why I am low on my numbers of catching skis this year. This reel screams when I cast! I would like to fix it and kindly ask for your suggestions.

I have a 5500 C3. About 4 years old. When I cast, it makes a loud screeching noise. I can still use it to fish without any other problems. It seems after a 20 casts the whizzing stops, I suppose because it is wet. But the sound eventually comes back.

I figured it needed a good cleaning. I took it apart and cleaned everything and did not notice anything broken. It was hard to tell if any gears were worn down as I have nothing to compare them to. I do notice that the 20848 gear seems to be a little noisy when I reel. I don't recall if that is suppose to sound that way or not.

Does anyone know what part I need to replace? Or which part to look at to figure out what is wrong?

Your help and suggestions are kindly appreciated and I hope you having a great year of fishing!

Send it back to Abu, or get a new one.

Or even better grease the cog gear on the left side of the reel and oil the post that the cog gear rotates on.

I'd second reelman's suggestion. Had this exact problem with two that were overdue for a tune-up. Took off the sideplate opposite the handle and oiled it with SAE 40. From there the spool comes off and all the guts can be oiled. All in all, problem solved and casting like new.

Thanks for your advice Reelman and Woody. I lubed the plastic gears on the palm (opposite the reel side) and no more scream. Now I can fish without my reel screaming bloody murder to the Muskies! Do you know how embarassing it is to have a screaming reel on beautiful lake during a quiet and peaceful morning? Other fisherman must have laughed at me and probably said to each other....he won't catch anything with that reel! And they were right!

I did not want to send my reel back this time of the year (because August is my best month) but that was a good suggestion. I will keep that thought in mind in the future when Muskie season is closed.

Thanks for all of your great suggestions. Now lets catch some fish!

One of my 6500's does the same thing. But only for the first few casts on damp mornings. I've had it checked out and everything is fine. For some reason on foggy mornings it just screams for about the first 2 dozen casts and then it stops. If it's a clear dry morning or if I go fishing in the afternoon, it doesn't make a peep. Go figure.

You know if your reel was a Harley-Davidson it would comand quite a hefty price, it seems those Harley guys like there stuff loud and obnoxious! Maybe it's time for a new bumber sticker: "LOUD REELS SAVE LIVES"

Personaly I could really care less if my reels screach when they are cast as long as they cast smoothly.

sometimes that loud screeching is from your worm gear and pawl. when its dry and has no graphite or lube on it, it will do this, hence getting it wet like most guys do when they dunk the real for a quieter cast, But regular lubrication will definitely get better results.

The worm gear and pawl DO NOT scream. It is just like reelman said, the cog wheel is the culprit. NEVER, AND I REPEAT NEVER, put grease on the worm gear; OIL ONLY!!! There are very few places on a reel that actually use grease.

Dipping a reel in water while fishing is a band aid and not the cure.

Cog Wheel + dry post = Screaming Reel
Cog Wheel + oiled post = Quiet Reel
Worm Gear + Grease = PROBLEMS!!!

baldy, I just spent 4 days in Canada with a reel that screamed like a banshie and she cast as good on day 4 as on day 1. I would have greased and oiled it but it really seemed to bug the guys I was fishing with so I let it scream (sometimes I just have to be a pest!!!)

I never said to GREASE the wormgear, this only collects dirt, along with oiling it.
Graphite is your best choice. If you've never had a wormgear make noise, fish harder.

Hey dogboy, "No graphite or lube..." quoted from your other post. What is the lube then that you are talking about? Do you spit on it or what?

Fish harder? I have used 6500C3's for a minimum of 750+ hours some years and the only noise that you will get will be the cog wheel. I have fixed, cleaned and serviced more reels than you will ever dream about seeing. Same goes with Reelman.

YES, OIL THE WORM GEAR!!!!!
YES, OIL THE COG WHEEL and the post is rides on!!!!

Grease only the teeth on the cog wheel and the main gear.

I, and reelman, can take pretty much any Abu that you want to throw at us and make it feel like new. We have taken total pieces of crap and turned them into sweet reels that even you might like.

If you don't or haven't done reel repair on a regular basis, then just read and learn. Reelman and I know what we are talking about. How do we you may ask; well, we could tell you, but then we would have to kill ya. LOL

reelman - I can see it now...a custom harley reel. Get those guys on TV to stare a reel making reality TV show.

happy hooker - I never thought that maybe my reel was just screaming because it was fishing with me....but you may have a point. I will have to say nicer things to it and maybe she work fine.

dogboy - What is the tube that comes with the reels? Oil or grease?

yes I know abu gives you a tube of oil, thats for the inside. Oil on the pawl has only created problems for me over the years collecting dirt and grit that is deposited in your boat. All Im saying is I like graphite on the pawl and wormgear, but this shouldn't even be an issue since you say those don't ever scream at all, so why do you even oil them then?

Metal on metal requires some kind of lube to keep them smooth. You use your graphite as I never said it was bad or did not work, we use our oil; JUST DON'T USE GREASE!! I have seen reels with a dry worm gear making no noise what so ever. Most people pack them with grease which acts like a fly strip, it catches everything and binds them up. Catching all of this dirt is one of the culprits that makes a worm gear and pawl go bad.

Reel pro's? Well, I guess you could say that we are as that WAS our profession for a while. We still deal with reels on a regular basis, but in a different capacity. Oh you should see what is coming for Abu this year!!

What's the best place around WI to send some reels to get repaired? Or should they just go back to Abu?

Thanks, Blaster

Oil collects dust and dirt and everything else that can stick to it. It's not only a fishermans nightmare, but it also raises the ire of duckhunters too. To make sure my guns were dependable, I always cleaned them at the end of each day, and then dried them thouroughly. I don't go that far with my reels, but if they start to screech, they need attention. One product that I found that beats the hell out of any oil is "Dry-Tef". It sprays on with a little red cocktail straw like WD40, but dries to a very light white film that is an awesome lubricant and doesn't collect dust, dirt or any other kind of crud.

I have a product called "liquid grease" made by Rocket Fuel. What part of the reel is this best suited for? So regular grease should only be applied to the highest load/slowest moving parts such as the drive and pinion gears?

Rocket Fuel, eh? Get it at Hatterass? If so, ask Tres for a diagram of how to install Smoothies, it will also show you where to place oil and grease. You'll see that he suggests to oil very lightly. Hatterassoutfitters.com Tres is very cool.

Oh, and as you may already know, never put oil in the reel handle as it will make its way to your drag washers.

Screeching on casting usually comes from the spool bearings. They need some cleaning and lube. As suggested, get yourself a diagram to locate them. Disassembly will be required.
