Posts: 8 Location: Sioux Lookout, ON | Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report 6/25 to 7/2 2005 Hello From Fireside Lodge in Beautiful Northwest Ontario, Canada. We had a fabulous week, a lodge full of excited wonderful people, having some great fishing. The weather was variable, being hot and humid a few days, cooler a few days, some rain, and a few big thunderstorms. Couples Don and Sissy (Virginia) Wheelock from Overland Ks, and Bob and Judy Burton from Lincoln, Ne were back to Fireside Lodge as couples for their second consecutive year. For Don it was his fourth year, and for Bob it was his third year. As they did last year these four had a blast enjoying everything we have to offer at Fireside Lodge. Don has a special bonding with Fireside Lodge, as he first visited us at Fireside Lodge in 1941 when he was twelve years old, and came every year with his dad until he was nineteen. These were the years when it was called Mike Ament's Lodge, and well known people such as Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Andy Devine, and many others would come to Fireside Lodge for their fishing retreat. Often we have talked about people being here in these times, how they dressed, what they conversed about, and here Don was in and amongst those very people. They did well catching fish especially Judy catching a Huge Musky, over 40 inches, and many Northern Pike on her last day. Bob also caught a Big Fat Northern Pike, as he described it, and Sissy was enjoying her stay and learned about the Inunshuk legend. It was wonderful to have these four back, and hope they will return again, as they inspire everyone with their charming and fun ways. Father and son Mike and John Kane, from Chicago and Rolling Meadows, IL. were at Fireside Lodge for their first time ever. This was the first time these two ever fished in Canada, and on the first day fishing they caught 15 Northern Pike and John caught his first Smallmouth ever. They did well each day catching mostly Northern Pike and some Smallmouth Bass, and had a great fourth and final day catching 50 to 55 Northern Pike and John caught his first Muskie ever. Both had fun in their first adventure fishing in the wilderness, and made some great father and son memories. Father and son Bob and Brian Jansen from Hillside and Westchester, IL., were at Fireside Lodge for their first time with friends Mark Leo, and Jim Lucy from Rolling Meadows, and Schiller Park, IL. These guys had an absolute ball fishing and enjoying each others company. They were always laughing, joking around, and smiling in the dinning room. They caught about 60 Northern Pike on their first day of fishing. Another day was spent going to back lake we have available and Brian and Bob caught 81 Northern Pike in 6.5 hours. WOW, what fast action and fun. Jim and Mark on this same day decided to try for some big walleye, and caught nine 20 to 25 inches, loosing a huge one at the boat. Between these high action days they were fishing for large Musky and Northern Pike and Brian and Bob located some absolute hogs, Brian having one follow he said was 55 inches or better. Brian and Bob are also resort owners, have a fishing resort in Wisconsin area, so they have seen plenty of fish, and they were impressed with the size fish they were seeing. Also Jim has his own production company and is an expert camera man. He has filmed many fishing shows all over the US and Canada, and was at the helm of the camera when we produced our only fishing show with Mid West Outdoors. All four ended up having a great time for their first stay at Fireside Lodge. Thirty year guests of Fireside Lodge are Doc (Pat) and Judy Hogan from Pewaukee, Wi. Doc and Judy have made many life long precious memories at Fireside Lodge with their four daughters, as Fireside Lodge started out to be a family destination for them, and has continued on throughout the years. Even though it is now Doc and Judy as a couple without their girls visiting us, I am sure while here they reminiss about their memories during the time when their girls were with them. Doc, as he would tell you is here just in search of big fish, does not care about numbers, and interested only in Musky. Doc's two requests when he left in 2004 was to make Closs Lake portage more user friendly, and to take care of the beaver in Cedarbough Creek. Well, I took care of Closs Lake portage, Doc took care of the beaver, and Audrey now has a new hat. Just kidding on that last one. Doc and Judy had a fabulous week getting 35 Musky follows, 17 strikes, landing 9 Musky, and loosing three boat side. Sizes were 30, 31, 32, 32, 36, 36, 36.5, 38, and 41 inches. The last day they went Northern Pike fishing for Judy's sake, and caught a lot of Northern Pike, and in fact Doc and Judy said they could have caught all the Northern Pike they wanted to catch. They also had fun visiting with other guests they have made friends with over the years, and meeting a few new people. They already reserved the same week for next year so they will be in the company friends they have met at Fireside Lodge over the years. Father and son David and Marc McFarland from Pendleton and Muncie, In were returning to Fireside Lodge for their third consecutive year. First day they caught 25 plus Northern Pike, one being 36 inches, and Marc caught a HUGE 19.5 inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. The next day they landed 42 Northern Pike, with David being the Master Angler catching an 18.5 inch Smallmouth Bass. Another day David matched Marc's biggest Smallmoth catching a 19.5 incher, and they caught 5 other good size Smallmouth, and about 29 Northern Pike. Their final day they finished with a bang landing 42 Northern Pike. David and Marc had a wonderful time fishing and making memories as father and son, and when spending time with both you can tell that they value their close relationship highly. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge as your place to spend time together, and David and Marc have already made their reservations for 2006. Michael Tercy, from Bethesda, Md, with Ed and Ray Burger from Oakdale, NY and Oak Ridge, NJ were at Fireside Lodge for their first time. First timers at Fireside Lodge they arrived full of excitement and anticipation. Those vibes made the fish of 10,000 casts covert into a Musky hooked, and to the boat on Michael's very first cast. Positive thoughts produce positive results. First day they spent exploring and catching some nice Northern Pike. Another day they caught about 24 Northern Pike. Their final day, fishing for Bigger Northern Pike, both Michael and Ray caught the biggest Northern Pike of their lives, with Ray catching a 34 incher and Michael with a Big Fat 36 inch Pike. They all had a very good time during their stay, and Michael emailed me a day and a half after returning home and expressed the experience he had while fishing at Fireside Lodge. To quote Michael's words in his first few sentences of his letter he said "Dear Allen & Audrey - I am back in DC, and missing Fireside already. I wanted to take a quick opportunity to say Thank you both for making my stay at Fireside a truly memorable experience. The thoughts of the lakes, the lodge and the good company will be with me for sometime. It was not only a great vacation, but a great experience." This is exactly our goal at Fireside Lodge, and Michael, Ray and Ed, thanks for being a guest at Fireside Lodge and giving us the opportunity to give you the Fireside Lodge Canadian Wilderness Fishing Experience we try to deliver to every one of our guests. Benton's Greg, father and son's Reg and Kyle, Doug and Jon, father / grandfather Regis, with father and son Marty and Joe Boisture, and Brian Satkowiak all from Grand Blanc, Mi were back to Fireside Lodge for their second year in a row. This group had a great family fishing trip catching lots of fish, and just having fun being in the wilderness atmosphere they all enjoy. Most of this group concentrates on fishing for bigger Northern Pike and Muskie. One day the boat of Greg, Reg and his son Kyle did fabulous landing 8 big Pike over 30 inch, and three being Monsters. Reg and son Kyle caught three Master Anglers Award Northern Pike Reg's measuring 41 and 43 inches, both being brutes, and Kyle caught a Giant 45 inch Northern Pike. WOW! What a great fishing feat and memory made by a father, son and uncle. Catches like this do not come easy, and having Greg at the helm of the boat did not hurt, and he is very knowledgeable in fishing, and tries to consume as much fishing information as possible. Just the evening before Greg and I were discussing the deep water humps in Little Vermilion Lake, and the great opportunity they have for holding trophy Northern Pike and Musky. Greg the very next day applied that discussion into the catching of 3 Trophy Northern Pike by Reg and Kyle, plus about 8 other very nice size Northern Pike. The next day other brother Doug caught a 36 inch Musky, and some other Northern Pike with his dad Regis and son Jon applying this method. Marty, son Joe, and Brian had a ball fishing for Northern Pike of any size having a number of 30 to 40 fish days, and the last day the whole crew fished for numbers and caught countless Northern Pike, with a few Muskie mixed in the days catch. Terrific trip was had by all, and they all hope to return fishing to Fireside Lodge in 2006. George and Glenda Marshall from Sparta, Tn were back to Fireside Lodge, and this time with their daughter Melissa. They came with very good friends Roger and Lynne and their daughter Brenna, from Easley, SC. A few days after leaving Fireside Lodge George wrote me a letter sent via email, and what better accounting for their fishing trip can you have than from George himself. George wrote: "Alan, We had another wonderful experience at your lodge! Please give Audrey our love and tell her we're sorry we missed her before leaving. The same to mom...Before I forget, the morning we left, within a few miles of the lodge, we were in awe of the wildlife seen. Right pass the creek we saw a bear crossing the road, another 100 yards a mom moose and her baby, another couple of miles we saw a bull moose, and to top it off a few miles later my first wolf !!! Glenda and Melissa were thrilled at the sightings...what a great finish !!! Add to that the-moose, eagles, beaver, ducks, deer, and I guess from what you told me, a lynx-we saw on the water-who needed the fish! An added bonus...that came our way. We ended up with over 160 smallmouth, 1/3 over 14" and 5 patch fish. Melissa caught her best ever at 18" and I got 4 between 18-19." Glenda is still after that 18" but she caught the most over 16." Roger's group held their own for the first time being there with 1/3 of the haul up to 17"...I found the musky fishing a little different this time of the year. In august their in the grass really well and are willing to hit surface lures. This trip I wasted a lot of time trying to find them there. Nothing but a few lazy follows. We finally located them on rock and wood. On Thursday and Friday we hooked 9 muskies putting 5 in the boat. Of coarse Glenda and I lost the biggest one's...hers jumped 3 ft. out of the water just out of netting range spitting her bucktail at her...it was the best Musky I've ever seen...mid-40's minimum. With 45 minutes left on the water for the trip, Glenda redeemed herself, with a nice 33" Musky-her first ever in the boat !!! Melissa caught her first Musky-28"-then caught a 33" Tiger Musky. Memories I'll never forget !!! I lost a nice one at the boat and then did the same thing a second time, finally boating a small one. Roger also caught his first musky, a 32"er that made his trip. I've saved the best for last. The pike fishing was much better this time of the year with the fish averaging longer and heavier. Roger said it was the most fun fishing of his life. Lynn was satisfied with 1 fish a day (before napping) but caught as many as 10 pike a day...we can still hear her shouting on the lake! Our last day was the best...we caught over 230 pike all week and got 140 of them the last day.Roger-40,Brenna-20,Lynn-10,Melissa-29,Glenda-25, and myself 16...all in 6 hours !!! Just plain fun...I caught a 38 1/2," Roger several over 30" including a 35," Melissa and Glenda had a few over 30," Brenna a 29" and Lynn a 26" What more can be said? You have the best set up I have ever seen for family fishing. Quality fishing for all is a cast away...plans for next year are already in the works. God bless you all, George P.S.-You've got to see this beaver video we took ................. Father and son John and Michael Lutz, from New Lisbon, NJ returned to Fireside Lodge for their 7th consecutive year. Long toothy critters, that's what Mike and John are interested in catching, and the longer the better. First day was fabulous with their total daily catch being 102 Northern Pike, and twice Mike caught fish on three consecutive casts, and John said him and Mike had 7-8 doubles. On top of that Mike caught an 18 inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike. So, how do you top that. Well, they did by catching 120+ Northern Pike on their third day. WOW, what great Northern Pike fishing. They continued to have great Northern Pike fishing throughout the week, and also caught some Musky with John landing a 35 inch and Mike a 34 inch Musky. Great Fishing! Great Catching by John and Mike, who have already made their reservations for 2006, for the same week. Kurt and Diane Haines from Avon, In. returned to Fireside Lodge for their third time in four years. These two invented the meaning of having fun, as they always seem to be laughing, joking, and just simply having a blast while fishing at Fireside Lodge. First day out they were in search for big fish, and caught 8 nice size Northern Pike in the 30 inch plus range, up to 34 inches, and Kurt caught two 37 inch Musky. The next day while strictly Muskie fishing Diane hooked three, yes 3, Musky only to loose all three at the boat, and Kurt landed one. A few days they spent chasing Pike and caught a bunch every day, and another day while just fishing for BIG fish, their plan paid off by Kurt catching a BIG 40 inch Muskie. The last day was finished with a bang as they caught 82 Northern Pike, landing a lot of bigger fish in the 30 to 34 inch range. They also finished the week with landing eight Musky and many others hooked and lost. Kurt and Diane have also made their reservations for the same week in 2006. First timers father Keith Wallace, and sons Nolan and Austin from Gallup, NM, were very excited to fish at Fireside Lodge. Keith is big into fly fishing and I was very impressed with his fly tying capabilities, and the selection of flies he had brought. The first day on the water they all did well catching Smallmouth Bass, most on surface plugs. Their second day they targeted Northern Pike, and they caught 81, with Keith catching 33 Northern Pike while Fly Fishing, and accomplished the triple crown in Fly Fishing by also landing a Musky and Smallmouth Bass. Nolan caught 25 on a Buzz Bait, and Austin caught 22 on a spinner bait. Another day had them catching 71 Northern Pike, and Keith caught another 26 Fly Fishing, and had to quit using the fly rod because of high winds. Their last day was spent Musky Hunting, and they had 10 follows, three hooked, and landed one 35 inch beauty of a Muskie. Upon their departure they told me they had a great time, and I am sure they made memories to last a lifetime. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to spend your precious time. Hot Lures of The Week: Buzz Bait, Mepps Spinner, Polish Shad and Perch Baits, Weighted Head Streamers, Blue Fox Spinner, Spinner Bait Catches of the Week: 41" Tiger Musky, 40" Musky, 41",43", and 45" Northern Pike, 19.5 inch Smallmouth Bass. Well, that's it for this weeks fishing report from Fireside Lodge, Please stay tuned for next weeks report. Until then "Keep On Fish'n" Alan http://www.firesidelodge.com | ||
