What do use to clean the bearings in Abu reels, the good old fashioned lighter fluid or is there something better?

I'd use clean mineral spirits, also called paint thinner.
Menard's has it for usually under $2 per gallon.

I keep my old stuff in a tupperware container, the dirt settles to the bottom after it sits a bit and I just pour the good stuff off the top.

More tips: use an old toothbrush, small kitchen screen strainer, Nitrile gloves(it'll take the oils out of your skin) and compressed air. Don't forget to put Super Smoothy Drag washers in all of your ABU reels.

Thanks guys. I tore apart six reels today and cleaned and lubed them in anticipation of finally starting my muskie season next week.

Gun scrubber works pretty well to, essentially the same as brake cleaner. makes it easy to blast the grime off and evaporates immediately.

I've always just used rubbing alcohol. Does anyone know of any problems with it? It seems to work great for me.

I believe the alcohol shouldn't be a problem since it evaporates. I can't believe I didn't think of brake cleaner, I use it for everything else. Thanks again everyone for all the good ideas.
