Subject: Ranger polyflake scratch repair?

Put a decent two foot long scratch in my Ranger that's down to the polyflake. I have the flake, clear, and catalyst ordered but I'm not sure on how to go about fixing it step by step. Anybody done this before? Tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tuff without seeing how deep or how wide the scratch.

Quick tip-

If large area try to go from radi to radi. Its easier to hide a patch that way.

If its a linear scratch scuff the area lightly and then use muratic acid to clear the area. This will dissolve any exposed flake.

Catalyse the clear gel at 1.5-2% by weight. Convert to cc's or mls. Fleet farm sells syringes to get a good measurement.

Put a light coat of clear down ruffly 7-10ml.. While the gel is still wet (This is where it is tricky) Try to blow the dry flake onto the wet gel. This can be done using an air hose low pressure and a table spoon. If its on an area you can sprinkle the flake better yet. This way the flake will lay down and stand up . Much like if it was coming out of a gun. If you can get your hands on a paint gun with the correct tip size better yet. Binks makes some 2 qt paint guns that you can get pretty cheap.

Catalyse new gel at 1.5 -2% and spray another 15 mils wet down.

Let dry over night then wet sand with 600 and up then buff to a shine

If you can get the paint gun you'll be better off.

The nice thing about gel-coat is if you screw it up you just sand it and redo.

Keep in mind that there are three steps a manufacturer does when he sprays a boat. Remember the steps are backwards from a repair job.

First they spray a clear coat

Then clear and flake

Then a background color.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.
