| I have a high performance Mercury Outboard which just had a major overhaul. I am looking for input from someone that may have a strong knowledge of reformulated gas and two stroke motors with an oil injection system. Most dealerships say that the reformulated gas does not have an effect on the performance, but most mechanics I talk to say it does even with the modified carburetors. I know that the low octane gas can have an adverse effect over time. I tend to honor the mechanics recommendations over the dealers due to the nature of the engine. I know I should not use less than 91 octane. The need for the rebuild may have been cause by the reformulated gas or low quality gas. I try to buy non-reformulated gas whenever possible. I have read 'fact' sheets about reformulated gas not effecting the motors but they talk about factory motors. I would need to drive about a half hour to get non-reformulated gas when fishing in SE WI. I HAVE to follow the mechanics orders. Is there any proven additives that could be substituted for increasing or decreasing octane to ask the mechanic for approval? Or any other questions I could ask to somehow get by and use the reformulated gas? In the past I have just used mid grade gas. Has anyone else had problems with this? Location: Athens, Ohio | www.bassboatcentral.com has some good Merc men on their site, you might try your post there, too. I was advised by my mech to always run fuel stabilizer in the gas, said these new gasolines break down way too quick to be without it unless you go thru a tank a week. I can't help ya more than that. Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | Mikie is right about asking at BBC,I think the main merc guy there is Sherm. Personally I ould try and avoid the Reformulated crap as much as possible and also like Mikie said run fuel stabilzer through it. For that ONLY use the Mercury Quicksilver stabilizer or the Johnson/Evinrude 2X4 Fuel Stabilzer. I run the 2X4 in every tankfull. I would also run at least 89 octane if not higher. | ||

Posts: 5874 | When you say High Performance, I assume you mean tweaked from stock with different reed valves, exhaust, and carb work? If so, I would be more concerned with Octane rating, than whether the gas has some alcohol in it or not. The reformulated gas runs fine in most engines. The issue with it is it will absorb water if it sits, and it does seem to have shorter shelf life. Octane rating is as stated, whether reformulated or not. this is tightly controlled, so I would not worry too much. | ||
