| I throw all kinds of baits. Not much for trolling (prefer to cast). I am looking at getting another rod/reel. Right now, all I use is a 6' MH Berkeley rod (old one....given to me) and an Abu Garcia 5600C (again, older model...need to upgrade...) Want to get another reel....longer rod too. Any suggestions? I want something that is going to be a good choice for all types of baits. Not wanting to break the bank either..... thanks | |||

Posts: 2024 | Do yourself a favor and buy a Fig Rig EXTREME series, not the comparatively pricey Tooth Tamer (though also a very good rod) in either a 7'6" MH or 8' MH. That Fig Rig will handle EVERYTHING from Jackpots to Mag Dawgs. For the price, you can't beat them. Also, they've got excellent customer service and stand by their product 100 percent. Couple the above with an Abu Garcia 6500C4 and you are set (80 lb. test superbraid). Edited by esox50 5/18/2005 9:31 PM

Location: Des Moines IA | Since you have a MH already. I suggest a 6'9 heavy St. croix premier. With a C5 Abu from cabela's. Next to a 7'6 MH it is the most versatile rod out there.

Posts: 91 | I got a 7'6" premiere this winter and can't believe how versatile that rod is! I've thrown everything from a weagle to single Musky Killers off of it and it handles them all. I have a Avid 300 reel on it and it is an very nice set up. you could get a 6500 C3 instead and save $120 and still have one heck of a rig. i second the vote for80 lb Power Pro, but would avoid the c4 for an all around rig. $130 for the rod and $70 or so for the C3 will get you going.

Posts: 425 Location: Elkhart, IN | I agree with MuskieMike, the Premier is a great rod and I love my C5's that have given me a few years of great service now. If you really wanted to treat yourself in the reel department though the sweetest reel I've ever laid my hands on is the Daiwa Millionaire's.

Posts: 2024 | Bemid-Joe, Do you have a price range? We might be able to help you out better if we some price range to work with (to narrow down our choices for you).

Posts: 827 Location: Minneapolis,Minnesota | Ooops....just noticed you didn't want to break the bank...forget the rod I said...it's not for the thrifty angler at $250+ 7'6" St. Croix Premier is the ticket.

Posts: 561 Location: Monee, Illinois | I second the Fig I love the new one I got and a Tica Reel (Thanks Mike Hulbert) or a Penn. The Abu's are nice but tend to have some trouble. pga

Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | I would take a look at the 7' Fenwick HMX or HMG. HMX comes to you at about $90 with a 5 year warranty. HMG comes to you at about $125 with a life time warranty. Both GREAT rods and excellent for throwing all kinds of baits. As far as the reel goes, do you want push button or thumb bar? Push button, Garcia 6500C3 for about $70. Thumb bar, Garcia 6600SSC3 also for about $70. No problems here for 25 years of punishing my Abu's. From old ones to new ones, they are all running like a dream. For line, SpiderWire Stealth in 80lb or Stren Super Braid in 80lb. HMX+Abu Reel+Line= under $200 HMG+Abu Reel+Line= about $200 Any way you cut it, you will have a difficult time finding a combo that is as nice as one of these for the price. Chuck
