Posts: 216 | Does anyone have any experience on LOTW Sabaskong Bay during the opener or weekend after (end of June)? Looks like it may be the only time I'll be able to get up that way this year. What do you think?

Posts: 484 Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | I live on Sabaskong from May to Sept. Opener can be spectacular or so-so. Lately, it has been pretty good. A lot depends on water level, early cabbage growth, water temps, weather, etc. Overall, I like the week after opener thru the first week in July for muskies. But I fish them from opener till I leave sometime in Sept. Small bucktails, small Believers, Crane Baits, Slopmasters, and topwaters all have been good. Where will you be staying?

Posts: 216 | I've stayed at Sabaskong Bay lodge the last couple years late Aug, things have been good there, nice people, nice lodge. That's where I'd be looking at again.

Posts: 7 | I know it's early in the season, but since I have a week-long trip planned for early August (I'm counting the days) what should I expect? I've heard to stay away from weeds unless they are connected to rock structure, etc. What types of water/presentations would you find most productive during the first couple of weeks in August? Thanks.

Posts: 2024 | On the contrary, get in the weeds. At that time of year fish will still be in the spawning bays or just starting to make the transition out from the bays. Stay in the weeds. If the water temps hit 70 throw topwater. We did very well last year at the end of June in Sabaskong throwing smaller baits like bass sized spinnerbaits, Mepps #5s, and burning tandem Mepps Muskie Killers. If you want I can go into more detail (got to leave in a few minutes) and give you spots in Sabaskong that have produced including a couple big fish spots. My email is [email protected]. Stay in the weeds, hit the rocks once in a while to see if the fish have moved out of the bays, but if you find good cabbage or coontail, fish it thoroughly.

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Skyshot, I think you are right on track with your idea of hitting rocks first. Patches of weeds in these rock areas make a spot golden at this time of year. I fish LOTW the last week of July every year, and most of our fish and all of our good fish are coming out of rocky points and reefs (best if there are patches of cabbage on them). The only exception is a weedy saddle, those are awesome all the time, but we generally use the thick weedbeds as a last resort.

Posts: 484 Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | Norm Wild has it right for August. These are the most productive areas that time of the year. However, thick weeds ALWAYS hold big muskies. The problem is learning how to fish these areas and whether or not it is most productive when you have limited time. Most will find it not worth the effort. Some will and have had good success. That's the thing about muskies....there are a number of ways to catch them and they all work at certain times. August is more about finding bloom free areas, fishing the wind and I have always liked the night time bite (not for the faint of heart or those who don't really know the lake). The first two weeks of August was the time when my dad always went to Sabaskong for over 30 years. He caught big muskies and plenty of them. Anytime from May to Oct. on LOTW is better than being at work.

Posts: 40 | rpieske, When you talk about the night time bite, are talking about right after dark, or fishing late into the night? I know the bugs can get bad and have been told it is onlygood just after dark. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
