Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | This is probably a pretty dumb question. I have a few 300 yard spools of my Tuff XP ready to spool my reels for 05. I used to fill the reel with my superlines as I used smaller reels. Now that I am going to larger capacity reels for various reasons I will use some backing and would like to put 100 yards on each reel. With out use of line counter, how can I divide the 300 yard spool into three fairly exact segments? I thought about using my line counter for the first one, then spooling the reel with it, then adding backing to my desired fullness(which is overfull compared to what most do). I'd then keep count of handle rotations it took, then reverse the process. Is there an easier way to doing this? I know that even using the line counter, it will not be exact, but at least should get me close. That way I don't end up with 50 yards after filling 2 reels, etc. Dumb question, I know. I have been using the small reels for years(5500 and smaller) and never had to worry about this. another question, do the little clip on line counters work pretty well? Thanks!!

RH, been there... spool a bit of line, then take a black marker and mark a spot on your line. reel up a couple cranks worth of line. mark your line again. pull the line out, measure between the two marks. count your cranks as you spool line onto your reel and stop when you've cranked enough to make 100yds. (i would underload by about 10 cranks or so to correct for the variation for the increased line take-up as your spool fills) after doing this twice, you should have about 100 yds left, give or take. double check your math by looking at the specs for your reel and check how many feet of line it takes up per crank...it should be real close to what you get when you actually measure it.

Thanks Mike. I thought about using the reel specs but know that the varience of spool diameter when filling would probably negate its effectiveness. I'll try the marker trick with about three cranks at the beginning of the spool, then reel in a bunch and do it again, and take an average. That is a great idea and I appreciate it!!

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | This might sound too simple but grab the end of the line and march in a straight line for 100 paces. mark the line with a piece of tape or just cut it off at the 100 yd mark. If you want your spool full but don't know how much backer to put on it then put the 100 yds of XP on first then fill the rest of the way with backer until spool is filled to desired level. Now you have to reverse the line of course. This can be done the same way by marching across the yard or park or wherever until the spool is empty and walking the reel to the beginning end of the backer and winding it back on. It also can be done with an empty reel to spool the line onto then back on to the final reel.

Posts: 107 Location: milwaukee | Ha, not a dumb question at all, I was going to ask the same thing myself..... ...and my solution is to get one of the cheap auxilary line counters that attach to a rod and use that to meter in line. I actually ran a full spool through one of these to confirm it's accuracy (or lack thereof) first. Then it was a simple matter of dividing the total by the number of reels I needed to top off in order to get the footage for each.
