Location: So. Illinois | I have another question about an Abu Garcia reel I have. I purchased a used 6600CL Rocket. I noticed this weekend while using it that there is some slop in the reel handle/spool. When I reel, there is some back travel on the handle/spool before the auto stop prevents any backreeling. Everything else on this reel appears normal. It is solid other than the minor backtravel on the handle / spool. On all my other Abu reels, there is no back travel or play in the spool -- when I stop reeling, the spool and handle is solid, no back travel. On this 6600, it is awkward, espcially if I am twitching or using a jerk or glide bait. Is this normal for the 6600's or is there something wrong with the reel - maybe a worn part? I'd appreciate any info anyone can provide.

| first thing I would ask are you sure that the reel has instant anti reverse? If not then it is working as it was designed. If it does have IAR then I would suggest first removing the sideplate and making sure that the IAR bearing is greased well. If this still does not solve tha problem then I would send it to Spirit Lake. |

Location: London, England | The IAR bearing, mounted in the sideplate should be absolutely grease free or else it will slip. You need to flush the bearing out with an oil dispersant, such as zippo lighter fuel, and either leave the bearing dry or put the smallest amount of the very lightest oil in there. That should cure the problem. Reels with IAR often start slipping in colder weather as any oil or grease in the bearing becomes more viscous in cooler temps restricting the operation of the bearing to the point where it slips. |
