Location: So. Illinois | I have an Abu 6500 C4 that started to act up on me today. The level wind guide will track to the far right. It then sticks on the right hand side and will not track back to the left unless I apply some left pressure on it. When it is stuck to the right, I can see the guide bumping as if it is trying to track back to the left but it won't go on its own. Can anyone give me an idea of what the problem might be and how to correct it. I'm not much of a reel mechanic? I just cleaned and oiled the reel two weeks ago and it worked fine over a long weekend before it started to act up today.

Location: W. PA. | Sounds like you just need a new pawl, one of these guys will be able to tell you for sure. If that's all it is, no problem, cheap and easy.

| Almost certainly the pawl, which is the little tooth that rides thru the gear slots. A source is Hatterassoutfitters.com, they have all kinds of "reel candy". If you use this reel for lots of cranking, i.e., bucktails, etc, consider replacing the whole worm gear unit with one that has a second bearing.
Be aware that you can get carried away tricking out reels. I have a couple that I've upgraded with so many parts that I spent more on new parts than the original reel. But the reels work like dreams, MUCH better than brand new. |

Thanks for the help. As you mentioned, looks to be the pawl. I like the idea of the upgrade also. Thanks
