i'm sure this question has been posted but i wasn't sure how to search for it.

anyone have any incite on gear ratio? i'm thinking of a high speed for bucktails but am wondering how much harder they are to crank. i will put a power crank on it but i would like some feedback.

thanks

For me the 5.3 is the way to go. I tried running a 6.3 but it just wears me out by the end of the day. If your only fishing a few hours here and there its okay but if your winding for 8.10 or even 14 hours the ration does matter... to me anyways.

Go for the 5.3 and put a power handle on it. It will give you good results with not as much effort. Plus, you can use it for more than just tails.

I like the high speed retrieve for picking up slack line on gliders and jerks.

I use a 5.3 for bucktails and surface baits
A 6.3 for jerk baits- suick, bobbie, etc
I use a Garcie 7300 lower gear ratio with a very full spool for big cranks- jake, grandmas, triple D, etc.- can crank the big baits all day with out getting numb fingers.
Gator handle on the 5.3 & 6.3 too
Remeber to keep your spool full

It really depends on the reel. A 5.3 Abu 7000 is a lot faster (ie pulls more line per crank) than a 5.3 Abu 6500. I've come to the conclusion that there are too many variables involved, and you can't look at just gear ratio while ignoring spool size and handle size, and even personal preference. All things being equal bigger handles, lower gears and smaller spools will give more power and less speed. Problem is, when comparing reels all things are never equal. One will have a lower gear but a bigger spool, etc. I think you might get better advise if you get some recommendations on specific models.

For what it's worth, I throw standard size bucktails & spinnerbaits with 5.3 7000, and bigger ones with a 4.1 7000.

When comparing reels of differant makes or models, gear ratios mean nothing. What you need to look at is how many inches of line the reel picks up per turn of the handle. Check a Bass Pro catalog and they list the amount of line the reel picks up on just about every reel they sell which will give you a good source to compare the "Final Retrieve Ratio".

Example

7000C3 - 4.1:1 = 26" per turn
6500C3 - 5.3:1 = 23"
6500C4 - 6.3:1 = 25"

The 7000 at 4.1:1 retrieves more line than a 6500C4 at 6.3:1

David 4 has an interesting fact.

I feel the faster is better. helps to pickup slack line when jerking to get bucktail blades started good. Of course, it's helpful to vary speed or speed it up during the retrieve.

I'm sure David 4 has an excellent point about the number of inches per turn. Also, there could be differences in the diameter of the line and the reel sizes. Interesting....

I'll favor the 6 to 3 ratio in most cases.

For working bigger bucktails I think most would be disappointed with a "high speed" reel. Those reels that have the high ratio just don't have the oomph to handle the big tails. It is much like trying to ride a ten speed bike up a hill in tenth gear, it sounds like it would be efficient, but in practice it just don't work.

good way to put it norm....and some of us would have harder times with that ten speed and the hill then others!!!

Go with 5.3 to 1 with a Power Handle. I also use a power handle on my 6.3 to 1 reel. The higher gear ratio doesn't help you if you don't have the right handle.

The Abu c3 7000 is the best reel to handle whatever you want to toss, whether speed burning bucktails or deep cranking crank baits!

The small teeth w/ a 6.3:1 reel will wear out pretty quick with muskie lures IME. I think it would be ok for jerkbaits though. I use a 5.3:1 for everything through.

As far as spinners are concerned, look to see what reel Doug Johnson, Dick Pearson, and Jack Burns use.....
