Location: Des Moines IA | Here's a start ... Lake,Length,Girth, Time,Date,FOW,Lure,Wind,Clouds,Casting/Trolling,Structure, and maybe in a moon phase or not? What did I miss?

| A few more ideas to add:
-Caught fish or follow(follows are just as worthy of recording as caught fish), If follow estimated length
-Lure type and manufacture, topwater, bucktail, spinner, glide, twitch, live, etc...
-Lure color
-Water Temp
-Water clarity(especially if river fishing).
-If possible what the wind/weather was doing the previous day or 2
-Exact Location
-B pressure, rising, steady, falling
-Day of the week(important). It can be argued but I have experienced poor fishing on some prime spots which don't produce in heavy boat traffic days. Whether they suspend or go shallow or just leave the area till it calms down. A good reference none the less.
-I also like a place for notes, something to remember the day by and also the trials of the day.
-maybe a place for judging the general activity level of fish that you seen, caught, or heard of??? (just thought of it) slow-good-awesome |

You can also put in digital photo's of the fish you caught using the "Insert" "Picture" commands.

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | Attached is the log I use. I have added a stats page on mine to keep track of Muskies Inc. points, average length in boat, and average length in boat for me. I set everything up using formulas, but the on the attachment they are not there.

| Try to keep track of everything. I have the date, lake, structure including place to record GPS location, water temps & air temps, water clarity, water depths fished, water levels, wind direction & weather, moon phase, fish seen or caught, presentation, notes for the day, and a link to a website that tracks and records barometric readings throughout the day for that area. I am trying to find a handheld unit that will track and record/plot daily barometric readings. I keep the GPS column updated as I have had my sonar and a handheld unit lose all my GPS plots from a few years back. Although my computer did crash and I lost my 2004 journal with all new plots and all my info. I guess if I had printed a hard copy it would have been lost in a fire or something.....Go figure. |

| Bytor - I don't have the website here at work but when I get home later, I'll try and remember to get it. I just put in the date and zip code where I'm at and I can track the pressure all day long. They plot it as a line graph as a function of pressure vs time. I include the link on that day's journal entry. |

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | Here's is an updated log that has formulas referring back to pages and such. The only formulas you will need to set up are the average length ones, and the muskies inc. total if you want that.

| Sorry for the long delay on that website for barometric readings. The one that I had been primarily using is not there anymore or not up. I posted a link to the one I'll probably be using this season if the first doesn't come back up. I posted a link to the main site. Put in the area code, city, etc. It will bring up the current conditions for that place/area. Then go to the "history" link and you can put in any date that you want. The second link I posted directs you to June 14 last year in Boulder Junction, a day when I stuck 3 40" plus fish. This way I have track of what the wind speed & direction, temperature, and barometric pressure throughout the day. It is pretty cool to go back and look up some of your more productive days and see a pattern with them.

I did some mods to it so I can use it for all my fishing. I will repost it here after I do some more work to it as the season goes by.
About a year ago I put up a similar post about an Access data base and someone volunteered to write one but I never saw it. I have no clue when it comes to Acces, but Excel is real easy. So many options. I think I will just run with what you started because I know how to use Excel.

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | Here is an updated one I was playing around with. The columns for bottom/structure, wind, sky, and moon phase now have a selection pulldown. Just click in the cell, hit the little pulldown icon, and select the info you want. A good way to keep your entries consistant, which allows for better searching.
Email me if you want to change the selection criteria, and I'll try and explain how.

| The Spreadsheet is very similar to the one I use but I have one additional field that some of you may find usefull and that is " Part of Cast " (Beginning - First 10 to 15 ft of retreive), Middle, (End - Last 10 - 15 ft of retreive), Fig 8).
Overall For the fish that I have logged the percentages by Cast are as follows
Beginning - 15%
Middle - 10%
End - 65%%
Fig 8 - 10%
What's more interesting is when the data is broken down even more by Lure Type ( Crank, Jerk,Bucktail, ETC.)
a full 80% of Crankbait hookups are at the end of the retreive, I think that this may be because at the end of the retreive the bait starts it's rise and rises faster as it nears the boat triggering deep followers , 10% crankbait hookups are on the Fig 8 could this be due to fish following and or missing the bait at the End of a retreive?, 7% Crankbait Hookups are from the Beginning could this be due to a strike or defensive impulse and the Remaining 3% are from the Middle.
The point is the more data you collect the more you have to study during those long cold hard water days. Now I wonder what the Data would look like if we all used the same format for data collection and combined all spreadsheets into one massive data library. Any one willing to try be the Muskie First Data Librarian?
