Subject: Getting a used motor inspected for purchase

I have the opportunity to purchase a motor that looks to be in really nice condition on the outside. Problem is, ice on the lakes, I have no way of testing the motor to make sure that everything is working properly. My thought is to take it to a reputable marine mechanic to have it tested out. What things will they test for and what kind of cost would I be looking at?

Thanks

They will probably check the following. There will be other checks depending if the motor is 2 or 4 stroke and whether or not it is a carb, efi or dfi motor.

1. Compression test
2. Pull the lower unit oil and look for milky colored oil, i.e. water in lower unit
3. Spin the prop shaft to be sure it's not bent i.e. uneven wobbly spin
4. Look at the condition of the prop/skeg (i.e. bent)

While you are paying a mechanic you may want to have him spend a few minutes looking at your trailer. Boats are worthless if the trailer can't make it to the lake. If the motor is in good shape you may want to pay him to repack the bearings, if he finds damage, maybe your seller will reduce the price a little. You may want to have him bleed the brakes and check the rotors, pads and master cylinder too.
