I fish with a calcutta 250. I prefer the smaller reel (maybe because all the years of bass fishing). Have never had a tough time landing big fish. It throws heavy lures like mantas and pigs well. The smaller diameter super lines allow me to use 80lb power pro so line capacity is not an issue. What other advantage does the bigger reel give you that I may be over looking?

GB,

I fish Garcia reels and I too use the smaller size (5600 series) due to personal preference. With Garcia the only difference is the size of the spool, gears and all other internal components are the same, I suspect the same may be true for your 250's vs the 400.

In the past two seasons I've purchased two of the Garcia Torno (bass reels with larger gears) for my wife and clients with smaller hands.. They have held up very well and I find myself using them often as well.

The only thing that a larger spool size will give you is that your reel will pick up a few more inches of line per handle revolution, due to larger diameter. If you don't have concerns with your ability to pick up line when working twitch, jerk, glide type baits then you have no reason to switch. I put Gator Grip handles on all my reels and have a power handle on my bucktail reel which is an older Garcia Ultra Cast 5600 and I can burn tails with minimum effort.

Line capacity for casting reels for Muskies is pretty much a mute point. You don't get the large runs of burning drag like you do with a Salmon so you really don't need all that much capacity.

Remember, most things like rod length/weight, reel size, line size, leader material really come down to personal preference once you've gained some experience.

No right or wrong way, what works for you is what matters most.

Hello, I used to use the 250's, for a few years. However I realized you work much harder on the retrive and need to use the lower diameter lines in the 50-65 line range. I fish in timber and that is a bit lite. Also I like the line clicker if I need to troll a bit. The biggest is reason is the need to work much harder to reel in line.....Ben

GB,

The big difference is not so much in performance but in features as you are aware of. The one major difference with the 250 is the line guide does not follow the line during free spool. On the 400 it does. Does this cause extra line wear on the cast? I dont know. But it sure is noisy. I considered a 250 based on the performance of my 400 but did not purchase it due to the line guide issue during freespool.

Im with Mark. I use the ABU 5500 for my jerkbait setups. The reel fits my hand well and with the ABUs the line guide follows the line in free spool. Just my opinion.

Drag washer size can also vary, a larger drag system is usually smoother....

The CT 250 is nothing less than a narrow spool CT 400. It uses all 3 of the same bearings as the 400. You can change the gear ratio to 6.2:1 by using the gears from a Chronarch. The Extreme Smoothie drag washers make a big difference. The spool is 7/8" wide, level wind freespool would cause more drag than it would be functional for. Once the 250 is supertuned, it casts like no other reel I have ever owned. It's the most dependable reel I have............

My other reels are 2-CT400's, TE400, 7000C, 7000HSN, BG 6500HCL

I had the same idea about the 250 .

I wanted to figure out which is the best reel Calcutta and the Diawa Millionaire 253. Both reels are very smooth however i prefer the 253 just becuse of line capacity and it is smoother than the Calcutta.

I had the Calcutta 250, 400TE, and then got a DAiwa Millionaire CVZ253. The DAiwa sits lower for better palmability, casts farther and smoother than both the CT and TE, and after upgrading the drag washers to Penn HT-100's, it's untouchable.
